The Morning of the Fey-blooded

M comes out of trance to see Syyrik sprawled out beside her, she gives him a kiss on the cheek and quietly gets up

Visiting Corvin

M pops in to see C asking him how he’s doing, he asks if all of the suffering will ever be over, M says it will and offers him a hug
He thinks about it for a bit then says he could do with one, M gives him a gentle hug, being careful of his back and he awkwardly returns the hug
M asks if he would like to join her and Alastros when they go scouting to keep his mind busy, he says he thinks he’ll stay and take over watch

Talking to Verrus

M then goes to find Verrus and gently taps his shoulder to wake him, he asks what she wants and she says she just has one question for him, he says he doesn’t believe her
M asks him if he can tell them where Varik would most likely be right now, Verrus says if he’s waiting for the spell to go off, probably near the center of town and says he wasn’t really looped in to all the details
M says she figured as much but he probably has a better idea than anyone else
Verrus says they’re going to have to watch out for his thralls, 4 people he is able to control though not through possession and are the ones who transport his coffin around
M says it sounds kind of like a vampire lord, Verrus says he’s seen him in the daylight once but he doesn’t tend to stay in his body for very long, adding that he seems to be making an exception for the group and then looks very solemn
M gets the impression that there is more to the story of Verrus than just being a goon for Varik and can tell he’s afraid of the group and of what he has done to them and fears retribution but he is trying to be helpful and really doesn’t want to die even though he knows he’s done terrible things (insight 25)
M gives him a soft, understanding smile and he seems surprised but calmed by her reaction
She puts a blanket over him and tells him he can go back to sleep then goes to find Alastros

Gearing up and heading out

M finds Alastros outside practicing his draws with his bow
She walks up beside him and asks him if he’s ready to go, he says he should probably get his gear and quickly runs off, returning a couple moments later
M tells him what she learned from Verrus and they head towards the center of town
M activates the Ear Cuff of the Vampire Bat which deals 1 necrotic damage to her as try tries to listen out for anything and is immediately drawn towards a sound (nat 20 + 1 for 26 total)
M sees a blonde man with spiky long hair in black robes, naturally red eyes, tucks something behind a stall, it glows and when he touches it his eyes change colour to green and gold and 4 people walking around like in a trance
She also sees a shape moves in the far darkness and hears faint rustling sounds she can’t see the source of
M watches carefully as the man and 4 people place the objects down and commits their placements to memory
She also has a look out for any good vantage or ambush points, imagining that he would be expecting them to come from the street Genevieve’s Inn is on and less from around the back of the town square
M sees a sheer, shimmering wall and takes a moment to cast detect magic, getting the sense that this is a very powerful and dangerous abjuration-based spell but can’t get anything beyond that (arcana 9)
She gets the sense that Varik knows what direction they would be coming from and placed the wall in their path and estimates it’s about 30 feet high and 90 feet long and tries to think what it could be but comes up with nothing (history 10)
Alastros asks if she wants him to test the wall and she says she doesn’t think that would be a good idea as it could give their presence away
He says that’s her call but looks like he thinks he could get through it and is very eager to try, M tells him he needs to work on his impulse control, remembering how Korbus called him “The Bumbling Badass”
They decide to head and M notices another portion of wall that seems to be meeting the top of the dome over the town and thinks if given more time the whole stretch would rise to meet the dome as well (investigation 20)
She also sees at the edge of town that the flowers stopped encroaching, but they have started bunching up around the border and manage to spot one flower popping up on the other side of the dome

Waking up and planning

While she waits for the others to get up, M rummages around the kitchen, finding what food she can so it’s ready for the others to grab
Everyone wakes up and fill each other in on what they learned from their gods and what Alastros and Micarafae learned this morning
M suggests they head around the back and that her and K try using Dispel magic to get through the wall
B remembers that the stone lord is still around somewhere and that whoever they leave at Genevieve’s will need to be able to face him if it comes to it (history B nat 20 for 23, G 18, K 7, M nat 1 for 6)
M asks if Penda would be willing to come with as having another healer would be greet but doesn’t want to pressure her (persuasion 17) Penda says she feels like she’d be more use staying there and that she hides the fact she is a druid
B comes over and says that he knows she’s scared but people are going to need someone to be there when they’re in trouble and she has the ability to be that person (persuasion 26) she agrees
They decide to leave V and Skylla as well as Vars, Harvek and Tintun, Ribbalt, Draekos, Sorken, Joey, Rynette and Axyl, Dona, Grimdahl, Eres , Orrinar. Thalos and T as well as the two rescued teens at the inn while Penda, Syyrik, C and Alastros will join them
B suggests that he and Alastros try focus Varik while the rest try to destroy whatever objects they were placing around
B says he could cast Major Image as a distraction so they can get the jump on him

Heading out

Everyone heads out and moves to a portion of the wall below the center of town and start to examine the wall
Alastros looks like he’s about to touch it but doesn’t as he says he thinks this might be a legendary spell then asks if anyone has ever heard of Prismatic Wall (Arcana Alastros nat 20, Syyrik 16, Penda 15, K 13, C 8, B &m 7)
Alastros explains the basics of the spell but says there is something different about it because it shouldn’t last this long
He also says that certain creatures can be designated as able to pass through unharmed upon casting but there’s no way to tell who without trying to pass it
The group question whether or not Varik would have set it so only champions could pass or just B, G, K and M
M says it’s just safer to assume no one can
Alastros says if they try to break through the wall it will take the whole thing down
M gives K a bardic inspiration and they both work together to cast Dispel Magic and manage to bring the wall down (M 14, K 22)
As the wall starts to fade Alastros says “fuck it” and puts his hand through, but takes no damage and seems disappointed

Getting Into Position

Before they move in M casts Bless on B, G, Syyrik, Alastros and herself then gives G a bardic
As the move in B hears a voice in his head similar to when M casts message that says “Bravo, bravo. Well done” B replies “I’m a man of my word and I’ve got a sword I’ve been wanting to shove up your spine”
As they all move into position a second Varik steps out from behind a building behind them, seeming giddier and more manic than the one they spotted in the center of town (perception M 25, K & Alastros 16, G 15, B 14, C 11, Syyrik 10, Penda 9)
Varik 2 Says “Well done! So you broke down the wall?” Then starts glowing with a silver light, Varik 1 doing the same as 7 motes of light appear around them each
B tries to figure out if Varik 1 is aware of their presence now that Varik 2 is engaging with them, Varik one hasn’t turned to look at or acknowledge them in any way so it’s hard to say one way or the other (perception 13)
Varik continues, saying “Well well, look at you, little champions. You slaughtered my abomination, you tore through my vanguard, shattered my defences. Now you stand before me and think you’ve won because I’m down to my final dragon chess piece. I’m ready to go when you are”
B says “Oh shut up, I’m so tired of hearing you talk” Varik to says “let’s go” as Varik puts his hands behind his back and looks to the sky
M suspects some kind of magical shenanigans going on and tries to have a closer look at Varik 2 but can’t sus out what exactly is going on (investigation 12)
B uses Find Traps and quickly points out where they are to the group
B gestures for Alastros and Penda to step aside and fires a lightning bolt from his gauntlet and Varik 2 who makes his dex save with 24 and takes half of 38 for 19 lightning damage

Round 1

G weaves through the traps and towards one of the boxes M saw being put down earlier and smashes it with 22 as a little orb bounces a little bit away and Varik 1 turns around to look at G. She runs after the orb and wolfs out her hands and tries to crush it but it slips out of her hands and rolls closer to Varik 1 (nat 1 attack) As she moves away, Jane takes an opportunity attack hitting with 20 and dealing 2 bludgeoning damage halved to 1
Varik 2 uses a legendary action to fire a silvery mote of late at Penda, hitting with 25 and dealing 14 radiant damage to her, Leaving a glowing wound and Varik 2 with 6
K dashes and flies up to the roof of a nearby building and Derek follows her
Varik 2 fires another mote of light at Penda, hitting with 23, M uses cutting words and reduces it by 5, which still hits and deals 34 damage downing her
Syyrik activates Bladesong and runs to a nearby trap and disarms it using his thieves' tools with a 16, the magic dissipates and inside it is a now inert clump of mud, and then runs up to below K
Varik 1 looks at G and says “So you finally showed up, you fought all my puppets, but tonight it will be I who takes center stage. Tonight I with pay the ultimate price” Takes a step forward and pockets the orb, then continues “A soul for a soul given talent, and I have so much soul left to burn” Then casts Firestorm on G who fails her dex save with a nat 1 but rerolls using indomitable adding 5 from Brutish Durability and 5 from bardic inspiration bringing it to 14 total and still failing, taking 33 points of fire damage
Penda makes her death save with 13
Varik 1 uses a legendary action to shoot a mote of light at G, hitting with 20 and dealing 5 radiant damage
B burns a spell slot and activates his sword then fires his clawshot at Varik 2, who fails his strength save with 8 and pulls him to B and Alastros, B then hits him for 23 slashing damage
Jane tries to punch G but misses with 16
SL steps out from behind a building, his eyes glazed over and jaw slack. He activates his rabbit rune and runs straight to M, activating a number of traps on his way, causing his clothes to start to petrify as he runs but looks down and says “No” and it all falls away from his clothes. He then punches M, missing with 12 but hitting a second time with 23, dealing 11 damage to her. She makes her concentration check with 16
Alastros moves to back up B and swings at Varik 2, missing with 10 then hitting with a nat 20 dealing 19 to Varik 2 who looks incredibly hurt
Verity walks up to Syyric and tries to punch him, missing with 13
Varik 1 uses a legendary action and fires a mote of light at G hitting with 19 but before it can hit her, a portal appears before her as Alastros uses Temporal Rift and redirects it at Varik 2 who uses shield but is still hit with a 22 and deals 37 damage as Varik 2 dissipates into water and ice, soaking both B and Alastros. Alastros looks at B and says “Simulacrum” B says he doesn’t know what that means and Alastros says “Water clone” B revs his now wet sword and looks excited. Alastros points at G and says “Each copy can do that”
M uses Misty step to teleport up onto the roof near K, Derek seems surprised then fires a firebolt at one of the orb containing boxes. Hitting with 13+2, destroying it
C fires an eldritch blast at SL hitting with 20 and dealing 7 damage then misses with 16
Jericho punches G hitting with 19 and dealing 2 damage reduced to 1
Varik 1 look at G as he realises the simulacrum is gone, shedding the stoic look as a creepy grin creeps across his face and says “Noble Gwinri of Khazad-Vrax, little wolf, you fight so hard to save your friends, to prove you are worthy. Let me tell you a secret...” he raises a fist to G and a Clawshot Sigil appears on his arm and fires at her, she makes her strength save with 18 + 3 and Varik says that was supposed to work

Round 2

S appears by the barrier, seemingly trying to break through it, the who town shaking as she fails to get through
G takes 5 fire damage at the start of her turn then uses Portal Fang to to teleport to one of the boxes to the northeast of the town center and hits the box, breaking it with 29 then picks up the orb and runs out of line of sight of Varik 1, attempting to crush the orb but fails with another nat 1 and it pings out of her hand, rolling down the street away from her, she runs after it but can’t quite get to it
K and Derek fly over to the orb that M destroyed the box of and K tries to use her talons to destroy it but fails with an 8 and passes it to Derek who fails twice with 18 and 12 and then flies up and drops it on the ground in frustration
Syyrik uses steady aim hits Verity with the pommel of his rapier with a 24 and dealing 7 non-lethal damage, knocking out Verity
Varik turns to S and says “Our Uninvited guest! Have you finally discovered you cannot leave? This barrier holds us all. You know what I can turn you into, lady of the wilds. I will strip away your grace once more and leave you crawling in the dirt as a mindless slug” K interrupts and yells “Oh shut the fuck up” S turns around to face him, her face betraying the fact she knows there is truth to his words and she does not like it. M says “Don’t let him talk to you like that girl! Come on!” Varik then moves towards SL and sees M on the roof, points up to her as an exact copy of one of Gwinri’s bracers forms around his right arm and he uses portal fang to get up to M and says “Ah, Lady Micarafae! Hello Lady of Ashes” M thinks that’s actually a pretty sick title. He continues and says, “I’m not going to kill you, I need a bard left alive to tell the tale” And tries to push her off the roof, but M is able to keep her footing (Varik athletics 16, M acrobatics 17) Varik says “Hmm, disappointing” and M replies, “You are” He then takes a step back and casts something on her
Penda fails a death save with 7
B walks over to Penda and heals her for 25 with Lay on Hands and tells her G needs some healing then uses Zaolu’s Aegis and gives himself 12 temporary hit points
Jane climbs up the burning building and gives Varik the help action
SL runs up to B and fires a beam of flame at him, B makes his dex save with a nat 20 and takes 6 fire damage then uses a bonus action to let him activate another talisman, activating the dragon rune but missed B with a 17
Alastros runs behind SL and fires two arrows at SL missing the first with 14 and hitting the second with 23, dealing 14 piercing damage
M casts Misty Step and teleports to the roof above B, makes her charisma save with 17+4, escaping the force cage placed around here and appearing safely on the roof, then attempts vicious Mockery on SL who makes his wisdom save with 16
Varik uses a legendary action to attempt to pull M over with the clawshot sigil, M fails her strength save with 2+3 but uses Korbus’ Grace to avoid getting grabbed and says, “I know I’m gorgeous, but I’m really not interested in guys” and he gets a creepy, joker-like grin on his face, seemingly becoming more unhinged as the fight progresses. Varik then claps his hands and says “You know, I think it’s time! You think this is a one-sided fight?” then points towards the town and says “Look at the town. You see, I don’t need to fight you, they will” as his eyes go from red to being green and gold like those of Skurth. The sound of windows and walls breaking can be heard all around them, but no one can see why yet
S shoots two eldritch blasts at Varik but misses both with 9 and a nat 1
Jericho and Jacob walk mindlessly into the fire, dying immediately
Dugan (the old man) runs in as the rest of the crew can be seen spilling out of Genevieve’s as a bunch of petrified people, including A, X and Gen shamble out of the nearby buildings
K also notices a bolt of light weaving its way through the people and stopping in the town square as Luka appears in the town square and says “Coward, you finally showed your face!” and points at Varik (perception K nat 20 for 27 total, M 25, B 17, G double nat 1)
