Lune-Blade

Lune-Blades are a category of sword, holy to the followers of The Night's Embrace.

Description

Lune-Blades are a wide category, varying in both function and functionality. The most common variant which finds combat use is based off a longsword, which has the upper half length of blade instead turned into a backwards sweeping curve. This curve is the defining feature of the blade and is very similar to a Khopesh in reverse. The blades themselves tend to have three main areas of difference, firstly the length of both the flat and curve and thus whether the blade is to be used with shield or without. Second the blades tend to vary in terms of the curvature, shallower curves allow for more standard swordplay whereas a more pronounced curve in the hands of a skilled user can be utilised as a hook against cavalry and shields. The third area of difference in the presence or absence of a lower point where the straight meets the curve, it's presence is typically only present on display/ceremony pieces though some fighters swear by it with various possible uses such as piercing armour without damaging the other point at the end of the curve.

Religious Significance

The church of the Night's Embrace claims the Lune-Blade as a symbol. Many depictions of the Goddess in combat show her with this weapon, even before the style was established, and as such some believe she invented it. What is not disputed is that her followers popularised it as a weapon. In her role as the protector of traveller, many road wardens and nomads follow her, and as such the weapons usefulness against cavalry can be needed, particularly against well funded highwaymen. Now the weapons are symbols of the faith more clear than any simple token, as they are innately hard to use and often derided as limiting by professional soldiers despite the experiences of caravan guards and Constellation Priests the world over.
