"Esullen, what's in your hand?"
Esullen looked up at his mother grinning from ear to ear. "Look what I found!"
He opened his fist to reveal an egg sized chunk of raw, red glass. Esullen's mother looked like she was going to faint.
"By the stars, we'll never go hungry again."
More Precious than Gold
In a nation where glass is the main, sometimes only, export and is the pride of the people who create it, raw glass is thought to be one of the most precious items which are found, not made. Sun Drops, as they are affectionately called by the Isuldian people, are pieces of small, naturally occurring glass formed from the heating of the famously red sands to the south-east of the capital Ïs. Boasting a rich red color similar to rubies, any size, even the smallest fragment of these Sun Drops is precious to the Isuldians.
One of the easiest ways to see a real Sun Drop is by going to the city of Ïs and attending a formal event hosted by the socially elite. Here you would see many examples of Sun Drops being turned into hair ornaments, a perfect complement to Isuldian naturally white hair.
Formation of the Drops
Sun Drops are naturally occurring raw glass from the famous red sands of Isul. They are created when intense heat from the sun creates a thermal temperature in the sand hot enough to melt it. When the sand melts, it can sometimes create glass. Because the red sands are more course than other sands in the Isul region, it melts quicker and easier than the rest. The natural pigmentation from the sand is transferred into the glass creating the unique blood-red look.
