Session 1: Bacon and Wolf Worms

General Summary

Breakfast

  • Daz waits outside for Neskur
  • The five remaining members make their way from their rooms to the tavern area, getting food from Tact and tea from Erin
  • Arete takes a corner table, Elgin sits with an un-met dragonborn, and Krathag sits near an un-met goliath
  • Daz enters from outside after waiting for a while, takes a corner seat, begins ritual casting Detect Magic
  • Arete isn't a fan of the magic casting without warning or explanation, and tries to interrupt the casting by cast Light as a strobe on Daz's book. Daz succeeds CON save to maintain concentration.
  • Krathag intervenes, threatening Arete - this is disturbing his breakfast time. Arete ceases casting Light.
  • ...How does Daz react to the group confrontation at his table?

The Pitch

  • Neskur Xohim enters the tavern, requests an ale from Tact at the bar
  • Invites the customers in the tavern to take a job: find his notebook, find his measuring tools, climb to the chain's root in the Northern Ridge, and measure the angles between the three isles which can be seen from the vantage point
  • Arete agrees ("no choice"), Elgin agrees (Kevin forgot why :( ), Krathag agrees (10% survival rate sounds like the right kind of danger!), Skorpa agrees (can't really go home), Miranro agrees (need to stay off the streets), Daz agrees (from previous deal with Neskur)
  • Neskur offers 300 gold for the journey, and is negotiated up to 600 by Elgin, Miranro, and Daz - 240 now, 360 when they return with the tools, notes, and new data entered
  • Mission accepted!
  • Neskur offers an enchanted twig which always tries to point toward his tools and notes. He offers it to help the group find his things.

Preparation

  • Bought food for the trip at 1gp per party per day
  • Considered buying horses, but dissuaded by price and Krathag's immense size

Travel

  • First day: encountered a small traveling party, including a halfling and two dragonborn. They were heading West toward the isle's lowlands. They shared a drink with the party and went their separate ways.
  • Second day: heard howling during the night. Otherwise uneventful.
  • Third day: wolf attack during the night! Five wolves and two dire wolves. They are handily dispatched by the PCs. Noteworthy kills: wolf's head split open from nose to nape; Daz last hit with dagger; Elgin caused dire wolf to run away, prompting AOO from Miranro and Krathag, Krathag's final blow removed all four of its limbs, creating a "wolf worm".
  • Fourth day: rain caused Elgin, Krathag, and Daz to catch sick - the two former were healed by Skorpa, and Daz was carried. This did not slow down the day's travel. Spider webs have begun to appear with greater frequency.

Skeletons! (not the undead kind, for once)

  • The enchanted twig became more erratic as they neared the bodies of the previous adventurers
  • Only the skeletons of the adventurers remain - their gear is gone. A closer inspection revealed that their bones were covered with bite marks.
  • Nearby, Neskur's tool and notes were found. Elgin confirmed how the tool works, and Daz confirmed that the notes held data as expected (Time | DegVerVen | DegVenDhl).
  • Along with 400 gold pieces, a deck of cards was found near the bodies.

Rewards Granted

  • Neskur Xohim's measuring tool and notes.
  • A dire wolf pelt (expertly skinned by Miranro)
  • 240 gold (for accepting job)
  • 300 gold (on dead adventurers)
