Arete Tryphon

Arete Tryphon

Arete is an adult male tiefling warlock. A young human couple found him abandoned at their doorstep and took him in. This couple had prayed to the gods for children when they had difficulty conceiving and upon finding him they considered their prayers answered, raising him as if he was their own. At age 11 his parents were accused of making a pact with a demon, a baseless accusation made unanswerable by his existence. His parents knew that this would likely end in their deaths and told him to flee into the night. Equipped only with a small pack and a precious dagger given to him by his father, he fled to the woods, lurking around the area hoping the nightmare would end. When the official inquisitor of Altir arrived, his parents were quickly found guilty and sentenced to death, ending any hopes of a return that the young Arete had.   Now twice orphaned at a young age, he fled into the wilderness and was found half dead from starvation and exposure by a group of his own kind. The gang of tieflings took him in, nursed him back to health, but kind and good citizens they were not. Arete's innocence quickly waned as he joined them in spreading their brand of mayhem and chaos throughout their corner of the land. When the law finally caught up to them, he was among those taken alive. The town in which he was imprisoned executed three of them a day, one at morning, noon, and evening per their custom. When he was the last left, he was confronted with a blinding light, some energy of Altir, personified as Dask'El, who gave him the choice between accepting his execution as the just punishment for his crimes or to atone otherwise. With little choice, he accepted servitude, and has been granted some measure of powers accordingly. Though kept on a tight leash, his own heart remains conflicted and torn between his own chaotic nature and the duty imposed on him to serve the light.

Mental characteristics

Failures & Embarrassments

Though hidden under the surface of a life of hardship and crime, he still flees from the guilt he has over bringing disaster to his parents. He doesn't like talking about them or what happened.

Morality & Philosophy

Though infernal blood runs through his veins, Arete's parents were successful in instilling a sense of right and wrong in their child. Sadly this moral core was eroded by the years of ruin and crime perpetrated by him and his fellow Tieflings. Currently Dask'El is the only thing keeping him from falling back into his old ways of spreading chaos and destruction.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Currently wants only to be free of his slavery, but has learned that tugging at the leash too much results in unpleasantness that he'd rather not repeat.

Likes & Dislikes

Loves music

Virtues & Personality perks

Excellent cook

Social

Contacts & Relations

Arete remembers little about his childhood, but one thing that remains clear as glass to his memory, the face of the Inquisitor who took his parents. His desire for revenge has never lost its potency and it remains his primary goal to bring about a terrible demise to this individual. He every so often ponders who his actual parents are, but has no way of finding out.

Family Ties

Arete never knew his real parents and always considered his human parents as the only family worth remembering. The memories of childhood are fleeting, but Arete distinctly remembers the inn his parents ran, along with his father's baking and his mother's music. He suspects some of their relatives are still alive, but has never had the chance to attempt to find them, nor is sure of the reception they would give him.   He carries with him a beautiful ornate dagger, which his father gave him the night they sent him away. The dagger was a family heirloom passed on to the firstborn son, and his father had tears in his eyes as he pressed it into the young tiefling's hands, telling him he would gladly do it all over again, that he considered Arete as much a worthy possessor as any of his forefathers.

Religious Views

Very skeptical of anything associated with Altir, the irony of which is definitely not lost to him.

Mannerisms

Keeps to himself, very quiet.
