Antharan War

Four millennia ago, Taas offered a prophecy to the King of Spyrys:
"Beneath the highest mountain of your eastern range, there is a stone of blue and purple. With it, your mages can find unparalleled reach. With it, your people can gain strength. With it, your kingdom can never be matched."
Desiring this stone of "unparalleled reach," the King sent his finest soldiers to explore the lush mountain range to the east. Through a tunnel below the highest peak, they found the blue and purple stone - the tunnel was lined with it. But with the stone, they found hordes of gnolls.   The demonic beasts set upon the King's soldiers, shredding through their meager armor. The dozen that managed to escape the carnage were forced to retreat without rest for three days and four nights back to Spyrys. Only two made it back to Spyrys, but they carried a great prize: a single fist-sized slab of the blue and purple stone. They called it "Anthara", after one of their fallen friends.   The name stuck, and word of it spread like wildfire. Mage guilds begged the King for the smallest grains of the returned Anthara. Only one received any. Through months of research (and many dead mages), the guild found that Anthara could be consumed by a mage to extend their range of magical influence to nearly unfathomable distances for a short while. One wizard had been able to Dimension Door himself to a distant isle (Bellisantirax, thousands of miles away) and back.   With Anthara's potency confirmed, the King sent the majority of his forces to the range to eliminate the gnolls and take as much of the Anthara as they could carry. They were stopped by gnolls, uncountable and ferocious, pouring out of the peaks, razing farmland and terrorizing the Spyrysian people.   War was upon Spyrys, whether they wanted it or not. The King rallied his people to the cause, and the Antharan War began.
