Date: 9/5/2024
Session Number: 20
Party Members:
Hrothgar: A Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer with powerful abilities and an ancestral secret
Grom: A young male human cleric with a bone to pick and honor to restore
Summary of Events:
1. Expulsion from the Guild:
The session began with Goldbeard expelling Hrothgar and Grom from the Undermountain Keep due to their recent interference. The guards escorted them to the Silver Stones, where Fozmir reprimanded them for their actions at the New Year's Ball. As a result, they were kicked out of the Guild and barred from the Guildhall. Thalia saw them out and left them on the city’s curb.
2. Atalas and the Sending Stone:
That night, while drinking, Grom was approached by Atalas. He returned the Sending Stone that the Defenders had collected during the siege of Illa Ancalen, which they had forgotten. Atalas instructed Grom to check the notice board and then departed.
3. Contract and City Crisis:
The next day, Hrothgar and Grom met at the city’s notice board and accepted a contract concerning a wyvern to the south, signed with Atalas’ mark. As they were preparing, screams erupted from the city as a pack of werewolves attacked the populace. Hrothgar and Grom subdued the creatures, noting magical markings on their chests that slowly faded. The guards granted them leniency, and they set off for the River District.
4. Investigation and Discovery:
In the River District, Grom visited the Cavefury Meadery to bid farewell to Laswynn. She begged him to stay, but he assured her he would write. Meanwhile, Hrothgar investigated the slums and discovered a house with a ritual circle painted in blood and dismembered bodies scattered around. He was startled by a skeletal hand touching his shoulder, revealing itself as a strange skeleton who addressed him as Lord Ilniax.
5. Murder at the Cavefury Estates:
Back at the Cavefury estates, the Sending Stone began to sound. Grom spoke with Chimmis through the stone and rushed to the Cavefury reading house, finding Randur and Tishri dead, their eyes, ears, hands, and tongues cut out. A hooded figure emerged from the blood, introducing himself as Chimmis. Thalia, who was hidden behind the door, attacked him.
6. Confrontation and Tragedy:
Hrothgar arrived at the Cavefury estates and found Grom and Thalia in combat. He entered the house, only to be struck by an arrow from a hidden assassin. As he felt his life slipping away, Hrothgar cast a final fireball, killing the attackers. As he died in the flames, he asked Grom for forgiveness and lamented never learning the truths he sought. Grom used a diamond to cast Revify, bringing Hrothgar back to life.
7. Escape and Fleeing:
Grom comforted Laswynn, who had arrived and seen her parents' bodies. Hrothgar investigated the charred bodies, noting Thalia was missing a pinky finger and the half-elf assassin was missing a ring finger. As the approaching guards neared, Grom and Hrothgar fled, picking up Jaher and Eldeste along the way. They arrived at Atalas’ camp, exhausted and distressed.
Character Development:
Hrothgar faced near death but was revived by Grom’s quick action, and discovered more about the sinister forces at play.
Grom demonstrated his commitment and bravery, saving Hrothgar and seeking to comfort Laswynn amidst the chaos.
Next Steps:
The session ended with the Defenders regrouping at Atalas’ camp. Their next steps will involve dealing with the fallout from their expulsion from the Guild, investigating the connections between Chimmis and the recent attacks, and preparing for further confrontations with the dark forces at work.
