Session V: The Fey

After a couple of days in Illa Ancalen, Eridim Cleremont summoned the Defenders of Riverfall and devised a plan alongside the team to ensure the safe passage of two refugee groups to Glen Eagle and the St. Ramah Monastary. Having decided on a course of action, the team departed to begin preparations.
Along the path, one of Cpt. Herwin V. Hamelsen's men (the old sergeant) stopped Jaher Taxxis to inquire about the deal to escape their commanding officer. Jaher, thinking quickly, offered him a spot alongside the refugees, where he and his men could simply disappear as the transport continued. Very grateful, he gifted Jaher an Immovable Rod before departing.
Later that evening, after a drinking binge, Hrothgar lay awake in bed, his head thumping when suddenly a piercing scream entered the wrinkles of his mind. Letting way, he felt his soul gradually lift into the air before rocketing through thousands of realms and dimensions all at once before landing softly in the bed of a forest garden. Across from him stood the stunning and radiant form of Shalia Waesrona, the mysterious wood elf, who informed him of her need for his help in locating Yol-Seloth the Druid, who had gone missing just as an evil darkness descended upon the Voltaire Forest.
She would also reveal that Hrothgar himself was part of a larger plan and that his mother was at one point part of a society who sought to produce a child born of pure Weave power. She told him to seek his father for further information, as she reached the end of the conversation. The next day, she wished to speak with the team. After providing Hrothgar with some answers to the best of her ability, she sent him back through the planes to his bed. Obtaining a Bloodwell Vial +1 from the queen, Hrothgar drifted off to sleep.
After breaking through a hangover the next morning, the team received their quest from Shalia Waesrona to locate the druid and they set off for his small cottage within the druid's circle outside of town. Meeting with Neridi, the druid's youngest apprentice, the team determined he had likely departed with his other apprentice Mermanas. Some more investigation led the team to believe the druid had departed for the Ancestor Tree at the center of the fey forest.
Hrothgar knew that Shalia had spoke of this tree. She said it was an ancient source of fey power and is where the wood elves originally entered this part of the world. It was a powerful source of power indeed...
Having concluded business with Neridi, the team set off towards the Ancestor Tree. A day of travel and a fight against some terrible fey creatures saw them assisted by a spry pixie who opened the way through the Withering Hedge for them safely.
After locating a small gnome despite several stressful setbacks, Hadern Cleremont retrieved a Pearl of Power, which dropped the false veil of illusion around them and pointed the team onward.
Some time later, they encountered the next meadow and found a dead Mermanas alongside several goblins and some skeletons. An intense fight ensued but thanks to early warnings by Hadern Cleremont , and good positioning by Jaher Taxxis, the team ultimately prevailed.
Upon entering the Ancestor Grove, Yol-Seloth the Druid greeted the team with some hesitancy. Upon realizing their intentions, though, he was quick to recruit their help. He explained to the team that someone, or something, had opened a rift to the Shadowfell within the Ancestor Tree. He suspected it to be the fey hag Greasy Marianne, under the direction of some unknown force. This had caused the Feyrealm tear to destabilize and, unless one or both were closed, it could be disastrous. The team opted to close the Shadowfell and attempt to stabilize the Feyrealm, which was the riskier option. Only time will tell what this will cause to unfold.
A terrible fight ensued during the druid's ritual in which a pair of shadowlings nearly killed Jaher, who was only saved by the druid's sacrifice of his lifeforce. The now undead Xaerk also returned, bearing memories of his resurection at the hands of the mysterious Red Eyes and another odd figure. Upon completion of the ritual, the druid was pierced by the Ancestor Tree. The Shadowfell closed, and the druid was pulled inside the mighty tree, dropping his staff the Staff of the Bull Elk Femur, as he was consumed. His final words to the team were, "It… is… the General. Find… Marianne and set my queen free."
Beaten and tired, the team lay panting as the Ancestor Tree opened to reveal a passageway within its many roots...
