Torwell

Demographics

All of Torwell's inhabitants are born citizens of the Empire of Bralthe.

Government

All management of the village is handled by the office of the Mayor, from the laws of the village to the tax collecting.

Defences

Despite its small size, the perimeter of Torwell is encircled by a towering wall that would look more at home defending a capitol city. The immense stone wall that protects the village was erected out of necessity, to protect the village from the many dangers that lurk within the neighboring jungle. Atop the outer wall are twelve 'watch stations' from which crossbow-wielding guards can keep a watchful eye out for ravening beasts or would-be raiders.

Industry & Trade

Everything in the village of Torwell is in service of cutting down the arborsteel trees found within the jungles of Tchar. The loggers (accompanied by at least two guards per logger) venture into the darkness of the jungle to chop down the trees, the blacksmiths spend most of the day reparing or replacing the axes that inevitably break against the armor-like bark of the trees, and everything else in the village exists to keep those industries afloat. To put it simply: Torwell is a finely-tuned engine for producing processed pieces of arborsteel for the Empire's weapons.   The one glaring weakness of the village is its crippling overspecialization- it can harvest arborsteel, but it hasn't left room for much in the way of growing crops or making other consumer goods. As a result, Torwell relies heavily on whatever they can import from other parts of the Empire. If trade routes into Torwell were cut off, it wouldn't be long until the village would be deprived of crucial supplies.

History

Torwell was established soon after the Empire discovered arborsteel's ability to be worked into strong but lightweight weapons and armor. With the ban on magic that came post-Harrowing, the Empire of Bralthe could no longer rely upon starbinders pacted with The Ram's Eye to dowse for the metals that was getting harder and harder to find within the Empire's territories. Arborsteel offered an alternative to the Empire's material crisis, but since it couldn't grow outside the jungles of Tchar, the Empire needed to have a nearby settlement to harvest and process the wood.    Establishing Torwell was no easy feat. It took no less than three attempts to settle in the area neighboring the jungle, on account of how aggressive the local fauna were. To make matters worse, there were sightings of various strains of Harrowed around the jungle's edge. Nevertheless, the Empire managed to get a foothold in the region through sheer tenacity.

Architecture

With the exception of the defensive wall, the architecture of Torwell is very roughshod. It's easy to tell that all the buildings within the village were hastily constructed so they would be completed before one of the many threats that lurk within the jungle could get the chance to slaughter the settlers.
