The first rule of magic is that Magic does whatever she wants. The second rule of magic is that you shouldn't piss her off.

Perhaps the best way to explain The Long Nap is as a siege, wherein Magic besieged the entirety of the European magical world, including those Europeans who colonized the Americas. Never before--and, we fervently hope, never again--had magic refused to function for such a large group of people and over such a wide geographical area. It's no wonder that it took Baoying Liang, a Chinese practitioner newly emigrated to America, to successfully institutionalize the study of magic there, as the Europeans and Americans were too terrified to try.
