Dragon's have left their mark on the world. Beyond the millenia of rulership as Dragon Kings, dragon blooded creatures can be found throughout the world. Dragons often look upon these species as "lesser kin", of the blood but so removed from the true potential of their heritage. Scholars debate if these are some sort of offshoot branch of the dragons or actually created races, carefully cultivated from the mixing of dragon essence with other creatures. The origins of the species are oft debated in circles both "lesser raced" and draconic, but any conclusion or concensus given is only the result of speculation. If there is ever to be an answer it is generations away.
Kobolds
The most common of all the dragon races, kobolds can be found in the royal halls of Xangji, tunnels of the Underworld, to the city streets of Concordia. Once the kobolds were senchals, aide de camps, and valued servants. Now, for the most part, they are in the same boat of all other common races, making a living through any way their talents and skills will allow them. Fortunately, the kobold gifts of guile, tinkering, and magic give them a fighting chance in the world.
Humans and elves have a general low opinion of kobolds. This has made kobold life in most civilized parts of the world to be more difficult than others. This is why many kobolds gather together in ghettos in cities, or in more remote locations, where they can have the strength of a community behind them. Even with this lower opinion, there seems to be an odd desire among some humans to have kobold servants and allies, bucking the general distrust. It is said that kobold loyalty, once gained, is unshakeable. Unfortunately, in certian circles, this loyalty makes kobolds to be considered scyophants, rather than valuable aides.
To this day, kobolds prefer to be in the presence of dragons. Many dragon lairs will have a kobold warren attached or close by. These kobolds gladly provide services such as guardians and servants to the dragon. It is the closest many dragons will have to their "ancient glory". A sudden influx of kobolds in a location is often a good indicator that either a dragon was recently slain, or that a dragon has or is about to move into the area.
Wyvaran
Often dismissed as "winged kobolds", wyvarans are much more. Wyvarans are rare, but are found either in rooks of wyvarans in remote locations or among communities of kobolds. Where ever a kobold may be found, a wyvaran can also be found.
While a wyvaran can breed true among each other, they can also "spontaneously" be hatched in a kobold clutch of eggs. Wyvarans born to kobolds are considered to be a blessing from the Gods. They are symbols of a kobold family's favor and regardless of background will elevate a kobold community in the eyes of kobolds near and far.
Wyvarans are the elite of the elite when it comes to kobold society, and even in the eyes of true dragons. A true dragon with one to two wyvarans, much less a near by rook, is considered fortunate, indeed. It may seem like a lot of pressure to put on to the individual, but is a rare wyvaran that does not rise to the challenge. The strength of their dragon blood seems to drive them harder and farther than their kobold kin.
Wyvarans not tied to duties in the community will often become mercenaries and adventurers of one stripe or another, in an effort to bring pride and gold back to the kobolds he or she came from. While it is not universal, there are few wyvarans that are "in it for themselves".
Dragonkin
According to their own traditions and tales, Dragonkin were created by the Dragon Gods to be the grasping claws of dragonkind. They were hatched from eggs that fell in the first Dragonfall, along side those of true dragons, showing their favored status above the other dragon blooded races. Over the centuries, as the other "lesser races" have spread and filled the world, and the dragonkin have dwindled in population, this superiority has fallen mostly to the way side, and most modern dragonkin are far more accepting than previous generations. Still, the occasional dragonkin gain reputations for their stubborness and arrogance.
Dragonkin are not as wide spread as their cousins, the kobolds. Most remain in areas once strongholds of the ancient Dragon Kingdoms. The northern regions of the Southland Continent, such as Tiblis, Khem, and Persiax, host some of the more numerous groupings. These holdouts of their former glory do lead to groups that are more "spiritually focused" than dragonkin found sprinkled through out the Western World. Outside of those areas, dragonkin hold respected positions in Xangji and have a number of enclaves throughout Vedia.
In the West, Dragonkin have a rather pronounced rivalry with the elves. They are both ancient cultures, with traditions that have outlasted most nations. Oddly, while this rivalry leads to games of one-ups-manship, it rarely devolves to blows. Both groups see such brawling as beneath them. Additionally, during the great Dividing War of the Elves, a number of Elven Households employed Dragonkin mercenaries. The ties from these days are strong, even if a little odd in appearance. An elven ambassador with a dragonkin bodygaurd that regularly reminds the elf that his talents were more useful than the elven kin that had also applied can lead to some easy misunderstanding of the loyalty between the two.
The Eastern Dragonkin do not have such rivalries with any group. They are part of the collective. They are honored due to their draconic ties, which puts them in key beuracratic, military and social positions. They are far more common in the Eastern lands of Xangji and the surrounding nations than in the West. The Eastern dragonkin still seem to have the same self-assuredness that their Western relatives do, which gives the group a reputation of arrogance. A yojimbo (bodygaurd) to a noble prince or a court wujen (wizard) can often enough back up their arrogance with skill. Such an attitude is not entirely without merit.
Spartoi/Kuei-Lung
The most human looking of all the dragon blooded races, Spartoi and Kuei-Lung are the Western and Eastern names, respectively, for the same species. Defined by a nearly human appearance accentuated by some draconic features, such as light scaling up the spine, pronounced claw like nails and caine teeth, or intense dragon-like eyes, it is easy for one to pass as human in most situations. The near human appearance is due to more muted draconic blood running through their veins. Most are decendents of half-dragons with family trees dating back generations to the half-dragon that sired the line.
Spartoi are found mostly in and around Palaegea. Here Spartoi are looked as potential heroes and warriors. Legends of bands of Spartoi holding back legions or of single heroes nobly standing singly against impossible odds are thick in Palaegean history. Most can trace their lineages back generations, with a few even going back so far as to trusted half-dragon generals and aide-de-camps to the Dragon Kings themselves. Occasionally, a Spartoi is born to a family that has lost it's history, the birth coming as a complete surprise. Such a birth will often cause a scrambled search through one's geneology or visits to oracles to determine the source of the blood.
In Xangji, being Kuei-Lung is different. All Kuei-Lung are members of nobility, part of the royal household. A Kuei-Lung's birth is a symbol of great prestige and an honor from the ancestors, and in some cases, even the Emperor himself. In fact, the entirety of the Dragon Emperor's household are either half-dragons or Kuei-Lung. The Dragon Throne City has very few non-dragon-blooded members walking the halls. To be Kuei-Lung means that you are part of the great draconic noblehouses, with all the responsibilities, benefits, and burdens that holds. Few Kuei-Lung have the oppertunity to explore the wider world, outside their imperial homes, much less outside their own province in Xangji.
A Kuei-Lung that lives a life outside of the courts is rare indeed, but they do happen. It is almost unheard of there being a Kuei-Lung being born to commoners. When it does happen, the child is often whisked away by Imperial Decree, or stolen by some group of revolutionaries or rebels hoping to create a "champion of the people" for use against the Emperor. It is these "rebel born" Kuei-Lung that often go traveling the wide expanse of the world, either to gain in strength to "fullfil their destiny" or in an attempt to escape that same destiny. A court-born Kuei-Lung may be sent out on special envoys, but these are rare and the Keui-Lung often attempts to pass as human in such situations.
Half Dragons
Once, half dragons were one of the most common "hybrid" races. The Dragon Kings filled their courts and army commands with their half dragon children. This tactic was both for "pratical reasons", the faster birth and maturation rates it was claimed, but also because True Dragons can be very open minded in regards to their partners. This trend after the revolts against the dragons greatly decreased the number of half-dragons. There have been times where there were more half-dragons then others, but never would half-dragons reach the numbers they once had at the height of the Dragon Kingdoms.
In modern years half-dragons are exceptionally rare. The only region of the world that half-dragons are more frequent is Xangji. The Imperial Courts have a fair number of Half-Dragons, born from the concubines to the Emperor and Dragon Princes and Princesses. Outside of the Imperial Capital, though, half-dragons are even more rare in Xangji than elsewhere. Any half-dragon born to a non-royal source is seen as a threat against the Emperor from the dragon that sired the half dragon. Such a threat is often met swiftly and with little mercy. To be a Xangji Half Dragon Bastard child is to often be the source of many a tragic tale told in hushed tones from courtiers and courtisans the Empire over.
House Kilath
Many drow houses have their unique focuses, in order to stay relevant and maintain their power bases. For House Kilath their strength is their ties to the dragons of the Underworld. These ties are so powerful is due to High Matron Ali'ir'kiira is a Half Umbral Dragon. Her mother is the Umbral Dragon Ferrevidirx, who has taken residency in the cavernes near the drow city. While she is one of the most powerful being in the area, she does not lord over her daughter. Ali'ri'kiira is not a puppet Matron and those that have throught so have not lived to regret the underestimation.
The Dragon Matron, as she has come to be known, has incorporated not just Umbral Dragons into the bloodline, but there are a few Hex Dragons that were "brought into the family" through a number of different means. This has been to provide an increase of flexibility in the House. It is believed that the Matron is also looking at attempting to breed in a Fang or Rattler Dragon to one of the other clans under the House. One cannot assume they are dealing with any one type of half-dragon when facing off against House Kilath.
House Kilath has not been around long enough to have Spartoi. They do employ a large number of Kobolds, Dragonkin, and Wyvarans serving as agents and soldiers.
