Overview of the Sentient Races

Elder races created by The Old Ones

After the work to create the fiery heart of the planet, armor the planet in a skin of rock, wash the world in the waters of the seas and oceans, and clothed in the skies, the gods realized their world was a quite, empty void.
  • Dwarves to sculpt rock from the highest peaks to the deepest depths of the planet.
  • Elves and Treants to cultivate, tend and spread the plant species over the surface of the planet.
  • Centaurs and Satyrs to tend to the herds, flocks, and prides of land based animals over the surface of the planet.
  • Merfolk to tend to and spread the plants and animals in the various bodies of water on the planet.
  • Dracokin - Shepherds of the skies.

Humans

Humans were created by Solas na Fírinne (God of the Sun) and Rúndiamhair na Chroí (Goddess of the Moon) while the elder gods were creating the elder races. The Sun and Moon did this because they felt left out and wanted to be a part of the process. While humans could qualify as an elder race, they weren't created with the idea of helping to craft the world. Instead, Sun and Moon envisioned that Humanity's role would not be creating the world, but to explore it, expanding to fill the world, and even wear it and make it their own. Because of this distinction, a line is typically drawn between the elder races and humanity. This doesn't mean the races hate each other, but the elder races don't see humanity as one of them.

The Children Races

These races were created after a majority of the world creation was completed, and do not have a role in crafting and shaping the world. Some were created to fill niches in the world, while others sprang up as offspring of the elder races.

Notes to Players and Dungeon Masters: Many of the races listed here roughly mirror (with minor tweaks and changes) those found in D&D 5th edition. Others may be substantially changed or completely omitted to fit the vision of the world I have. For the players who wish to play races not found on the planet, you may find they don't fit well in the world. It's one thing to play as a member of a race that is perceived benign or hostile to a small, out of the way town that has never seen such but does have rumor and legend about them. A human town that has never encountered an orc or troll would still know about them. It's completely different when "this thing" that no one has seen before suddenly shows up. There's going to be confusion, hostility, and fear. They may misidentify the character as a race from the planet, possibly picking one of the nightmare races they fear. Check with your DM if you wish to create a character that doesn't come from this world.   DM's will need to answer two questions before allowing races that aren't found in this world: How did these races that don't belong in the world get here, and how is the world and its denizens respond to the invaders? Did your players get into the world via magics or the whim of a heartless deity? Is there a time limit to how long in they are in the world before they're yanked back, or are they trapped in the world? Do the players know they're no longer in their world? Will they even care? And how will a world that already has biases and hatred between the known sentient races in the world deal with an unknown? Will the world be openly hostile? Does their presence break treaties and causes confusion and war? Will towns close up and cower in the corner when they show up? If you do allow them in the world, don't just plop them in the middle of Foinse na Beatha (Source of Life - Continent) and expect everyone accepts them with open arms.
