Session 22: We Don't Need No Education

General Summary

After we finish taking out the bugs and pretending to be pest control for the day, we carry on towards a small town that might boast a reward for that. We pass what appears to be Dave the Barbarian after his life has fallen apart, claiming that some other guy stole his mind and was after him. So what do we do? Find this other guy, who is very much dead, and have Amelia raise him back up to go after the man who calls himself “Gone”. What I’m sure could’ve been some deep, philosophical quest to save that man from himself turns into little more than a joke and off we go. We collect the small reward from the town, find wanted posters for our buddy Tempura (may his soul never find peace), and a cave that could be a shortcut to our destination.     Cayde scouts it out and sees a gathering of people with sacks full of goods, so of course, we run right in…and find nothing. Everybody’s gone, but their stuff’s left behind. As we go to grab it, we’re all ambushed and realized we should’ve listened to Cayde’s frantic meowing to alert us to enemies beforehand, but hindsight’s 20/20. We’re evenly matched with these rival possible pirates and they manage to turn the tides on us quickly. A few of us are nearly downed in the chaos, but we flip the table on them and kill them all. With no way of getting the goods back to the ship when we’re so close to the treasure in the heart of this continent, we leave Owkbanok behind and send TT’s parrot to go fetch our crew.     As we reach the grasslands, there stands another small town and a large bardic college. Bards are lavish and dramatic, so they’d have money, right? We decide to put the breaks on our plans to rob the college, but rather than storm the place and have a bunch of misunderstood souls with parental issues take silent rage out on us; we decide to approach this with an actual plan. Amelia will pretend to be a student, I’m her boyfriend who’s urged her into this life, and Inami’s the bodyguard her rich parents hired. While we do it, TT will go in invisibly behind us to look through the student records and see who’d make the best targets. We reach the main office and Amelia dramatically declares that she’s Elena Danvers, a pianist from Kalimar, and when asked to show that she can actually play; Amelia pulls through.     There’s a 25 gold entry fee into the college, which she tries to get me to pay. So Inami loudly announces that she slept with Amelia, so I have to pretend to have a boyfriend breakdown. I put on the fake tears and a sob story about how I was going to ask for her hand in marriage, and the gnome at the counter says they don’t want people like her in here. I come back and say they should let her live her dreams still so that she may better herself, and this whole display moves several people to tears. With that, "Elena Danvers" secures a place within the college and we can begin the next phase of our plan. Since searching the records turned out to be a bust for TT, Amelia’s to throw a celebratory party on the grounds, giving the rest of us an opportunity to ransack the college while everyone’s too drunk to do anything.     Preparations are in order in that case. Inami’s sent out to grab booze, I go off to find firewood for the massive bonfire, and TT’s left to wander and case the place as subtly as she can. As I’m out, I pass a gnome who warns me that it’s dangerous out here. I ask for more details and she tells me stories of dopplegangers that wander these forests. She’s on the run after her brother was arrested for murder, though she says he had nothing to do with it as somebody literally stole his identity because he was with her that entire day. As she talks of the murder and a little more of her brother, I subtly look her over to make sure she’s actually a gnome. Surprise! She’s not, but I don’t call her out for it and once her tale concludes, she gifts me her brother’s flute and bids me farewell. TT manages to case a few of the rooms of the richer students and Amelia finds plenty of people to party with. With our preparations complete, we all meet up back in the grasslands and I get stuck giving a small lesson on the differences between changelings and dopplegangers. Now all that’s left to do is wait for the guests to arrive and for the party to begin.
