Court of Masks

The Court of Masks is a circle of wizards who formally educate other wizards in the art of spellcasting. Because formal magical education is illegal under the rule of the Iron Legion , the Council of Masks operates in secret with the support of the Righteous Spear .   All members of the Court of Masks, once initiated, never meet one another without some sort of mask or face covering and use pseudonyms. All members are known by a "craft name," a sort of nickname and nobody knows each others' real names. Additionally, each mentor only ever takes a single apprentice on at a time; gone are the days of large classrooms of dozens of students. While this is inconvenient it helps to keep the organization alive. Even under magical coercion, it's impossible to give out information that you don't know, such as the identities of your student or your teacher.   The Court of Masks rarely meets as a whole organization, the better to keep their enemies from locating them. They have sown rumors that the organization meets in the ruins of the Convocation of Mysteries , but that is a lie. There are no formal meeting grounds, lessons often taking place in basements or private homes of the masters. That doesn't keep some from, such as members of the Iron Legion , from investigating the ruins looking for the Court of Masks, but those who poke too far into the ruins often fall prey to magical traps or uncontrolled experiments.   To join the group, one must first locate a master which is generally done by asking the right people, most commonly members of local thieves' guilds or members of the Righteous Spear if one is known. A meeting is then set up, which often takes a long period of time as the Court of Masks vets new students very carefully to make sure they aren't letting a traitor into their midst. Once vetted, an initiate is given a location and a time, where they will meet a member of the Court. Both the potential student and the current member show up in masks and present each other with a unique mark that identifies the student and the master. Once this is done, the hopeful apprentice is given a series of tasks designed to demonstrate both loyalty and magical ability. If these tests are passed, the apprentice is officially welcomed into the mentor-student relationship and the education begins.
