Vern Summerfield Character in Pathfinder 2e Project | World Anvil

Vern Summerfield

Vern Summerfield is considered by many to be one of the greatest explorers known to the world. Although his beginnings are considered simple, he has emerged as a figure of great importance to the Setican people, while also earning small reverence from even explorers of the Old World.Vern's life begins in Setica's province known as the Estelleon Plains, where he grew up hunting the various beasts common to the wilds of the southern reaches of the Setican Empire. His early training in guns and equipment, with the help of his father and uncle earned him a fearsome reputation as a hunter and ranger. By the time he reached young adulthood, he had volunteered to join the Setican Armed Forces. Hoping that this would help fuel his wanderlust, Summerfield found himself limited in his ability to travel, spending much of his time in one army base for years at a time. This was made even worse by the fact that Setica wouldn't join any major wars, which prompted him to only go through military drills and exercise which only compounded his boredom. However, this all changed when news came that the emperor of Setica was looking for explorers to visit the far-reaching and near-endless "Matanza Desert". The desert, at this point, had no ruins found and was largely seen as an obstacle to Setican attempts to claim the whole continent.Summerfield leapt at the opportunity. Despite only being an Officer's Aide-de-camp, he was able to assist with notetaking and making sure that maps were correct. He also assisted in file keeping and artistry, drawing detailed notes and images of the rare flora and fauna of the New World. His time came during the initial months of their soon to be five year expedition, when the officer leading was killed by an unknown disease which also infected and killed the Bosun and Quartermaster. With little option, Summerfield took up the cause and, using initial reports, they were able to seek out help from local dragonborn and kobolds. For the next five years, Vern would diagram a complete collection of plants and animals, as well as cultures that existed and eventually return home to publish the first of many volumes that would become his magnum opis, "Vern Summerfield's Guide To The New World", a resource used by many who live in and come to Setica. He would live the rest of his life, exploring and writing all his newest discoveries, compiling them into the great informational bookset known in the World.
