The Lady Danay Grey Character in Paradiso | World Anvil

The Lady Danay Grey

The enigmatic and charismatic Lady Danay Grey is chairwoman of Paradiso Bus Services, which claims a monopoly on the road-based public transport in Paradiso. It also owns a significant amount of land and several buildings including the Preston-Paradise Bus Terminal on the outskirts of Paradiso' capital city of Brendantown.   House Grey
The House of Grey is an ancient English noble family from Creully in Normandy. The founder of the House of Grey was Anchetil de Greye, a Norman chevalier and vassal of William FitzOsbern, 1st Earl of Hereford, one of the very few proven companions of William the Conqueror known to have fought at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The Greys were first ennobled in the 13th century as Barons Grey of Codnor, of Ruthyn and of Wilton, and they were later elevated as viscounts, earls, marquesses, dukes and royalty.   The Paradiso line of the Grey family claim their linage to Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey (c. 1764–1845), who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1830 to 1834. During his time as Foreign Secretary (1806–1807) Charles Grey briefly visited Paradiso and supposedly had an affair with a powerful local woman. This is denied to this day by British records and by the Grey family but either way by the mid 19th Century a powerful family had established themselves in Paradiso using the Grey name, or sometimes other aliases, and clearly had links - real or imagined - with the British administrators of the islands.   The Grey's of Paradiso became heavily involved in all manner of trade, particularly in the trade of Earl Grey tea to the island, cementing their imperial ties and claims to the Grey family proper into the cultural fabric of Paradiso. By the start of the 20th century the Grey's were the masters of getting various goods into Paradiso towns and ports so they could be shipped on by others throughout the empire.   The Rise of the Paradiso Bus Service   The Grey family were always keen adopters of transportation technology. While the islands weren't well suited to railways the Grey's worked to finance some early attempts at railways on Paradiso. They brought trams to some of Paradiso's cities in the mid 19th century and were the first people to own and use cars in Paradiso. The Grey family invested heavily in trolly buses throughout the late 19th century and later the motor bus. The disruption of World War II caused issues for the Grey family, as did the subsequent decline of British influence. The decision to take a more and more isolationist approach during the Cold War saw a need for the Grey's to diversify. Slowly over the course of the next few decades, they sort to dominate domestic travel. Buying out rival bus firms, even sabotaging rival infrastructure if necessary.   In the early years of El Presidente's rule, he would keep the Grey family onside in a cagey relationship where both sides knew the other could setback the other ambitions if they chose. As time passed it became clear El Presidente's grip on the islands was not loosening and he was in a stronger position compared to the Grey's. Mendo Grey was the first to alter the relationship between the Grey's and the presidency. Rather than seeing El Presidente as purely a threat, Mendo saw the changes in Paradiso as an opportunity. He merged all of the various Grey transportations holdings into the Paradiso Bus Service (PBS) - a modern corporation backed by the ancient Grey family. Mendo moved from Barron to Chairman and became one of the new wealthy elite of Paradiso.   Rise of the Grey Lady   Lady Danay Grey was born in 1993 to Hennrick Grey, son of Mendo Grey, and Valeria Navegar-Grey. Her childhood was sheltered from the turbulence of the late 1990s in Paradiso. She had a close relationship with Mendo Grey who mentored her to some extent. She attended the best schools in Paradiso before going to college in the United States and spending at the university in Aberdeen (UK). She was known for her interest in mechanics and logistics, studying engineering and applied mathematics, but also her love of sport playing for the Aberdeen University Woman's Football Club showcasing her free style cage football skills picked up as a child on Paradiso. Upon her return to Paradiso in 2017 she found Mendo had died and her father Hennrick was now Chairman of PSB. Hennrick found Denay's return an inconvenience and she was frustrated by his unwillingness to involve her in the running of the company.   Throughout 2018 and early 2019 PSB suffered a series of crises due to mismanagement and other financial irregularities. Hennrick also ignited a bitter industrial dispute with the PBS conductors union over benefits and miss treatment. It was clear that Hennrick was more in the model of his ancestors than the visionary Mendo. With concern growing amoung the wider Grey family about Hennrick's competency moves were made behind the scenes to shift some of Mendo's remaining holdings to Denay instead of Hennrick. This opened a rift in the family which Denay widened with public criticism of the PBS board earning her the sympathy of the conductors union, amoung others.   On 1 August 2019 PBS shareholders, mostly in the Grey family, removed many of the board members in what would be known as the Bus Coup of 2019. By the end of August Danay was installed as Chairwoman & CEO of PBS. Before formally ending the dispute with the conductors union Denay sent four former board members, including her own father, home on the 747 bus where they were ambushed and shot by the militant wing of the conductors union. From this point on there was no doubting both the rightful inheritance and ruthlessness of the Grey Lady who consolidated her power over PBS and the Grey House throughout the remainder of 2019.   The Chairwoman   Now in charge of PBS Lady Danay Grey sort to build on Mendo's vision and continue developing PBS into a modern transportation company. She applied for grant funding from various international bodies promoting green transport in the Caribean to remark the companies financial issues and worked with her counter-parts at Paradiso Ferries and Paraero internal airways to create the Paradiso Pass which reestablished PBS as a key player in Paradiso transportation. Much like Mendo had embraced the changes that came with El Presidento's rise to power, Danay looked towards opportunity by working to unify transportation instead of seeing boat and plane as a threat.   Despite her popularity with many of her employees and members of her family, Danay still faced opposition from those believing her too young and weak for Paradiso politics. When rumours reached her of the formation of the Paradiso FA and that Football was coming to the islands. She seized the opportunity to leverage PBS influence to back the new FA; offering buses to transport teams and fans, informally advising and encouraging wealthy Paradisians to set up teams, and drawing up plans for her own team - with dreams of winning the World Club Cup one day to put her on par with the super-elite of Football. Considering all she has achieved so far and the networks at her disposal many are looking towards the Grey Lady in trepidation.
