Bongo Bongo FC

Team: Bongo Bongo FC City: Wannabongo Colours: Bright orange shirts and maroon shorts Nickname: The Bongo also The Antelopes and The cursed ones (derogatory name) Stadium: The Tempo   Often misconception about where Bongo Bongo gets its name from is that an old tale stated that the Bongo Drum was first invented in Wannabongo leading to an age old feud with Cuba as to who created it first.   In fact, this story is completely unfounded and the club and city actually gets its name from the Bongo antelope from Africa (Sierra Leone, Central African Republic and Congo). When a ship arrived way back on the island with workers from said countries most of the people on board had died, but a Bongo that was on board to be given as a gift to the island survived and it was said that the Bongo had in fact spread a disease which killed the people (hence the cursed nickname). The surviving members (only 13 from 246) tried to give away the Bongo to free themselves from the curse by asking “Does anyone wanna Bongo?” And thus the name was given to the area. The Bongo however, escaped and ran into the jungle inland and was never seen again. Lore on the island tells stories of a giant Bongo still in the jungle to this day - kind of like a Sasquatch story but this is unfounded. The football club however takes its name from the antelope instead of the incorrectly assumed Bongo drum and has an antelope on its badge and distinct white markings on its orange jerseys to match the Bongo’s pattern. The City however has embraced the Bongo drum theory, using it as a means to make money from tourism. The worlds largest bongo factory now belongs in Wannabongo and sales of Bongo drums is a large part of the islands income. The wood from the nearby jungle is used in manufacturing the drums. The embracing of the Bongo drum in Wannabongo further strengthens the feud with Cuba. Also, the world’s largest Bongo drum can be found at the Bongo Bongo FC stadium, known as the Tempo and is played constantly throughout during the matches by the club’s Bongo antelope mascot, Umbongo. It is said to have a circumference of a football pitch centre circle and is so loud that it can be heard on all neighbouring islands, which results in much annoyance to other parts of Paradiso and hatred towards Bongo Bongo from rival fans, who rank it as the number 1 most annoying noise ahead of the vuvuzela. The stadium is known as the Tempo due to the constant banging of the large Bongo which does not stop throughout the whole game and last sometimes even an hour before and after, especially after a victory. c c c
The African heritage, the famous Bongo factory, the mysterious jungle folklore and the rivalry with the pesky Cubans. The football isn't always great but the fans and community spirit and continuous drumming can not be beaten. It is an impossible challenge to find a single person without a smile on their face.
