Monstrosities

Oh gods the trees, the TREES
— Unknown Lumberjack
Arborial: Living cycloptic trees. They crawl with their “roots”, and have maws beneath their trunks. Their eyes are a bioluminescent green, as their most common prey, Forest Fiends, can not see green. They are afraid of fire, as well as being quite weak to it. They are usually wider and shorter than regular trees.   Arborials are not the trees themselves, or at least they don’t start off that way. When they hatch they are soft little monstrosities, mostly a disc with an eye and all together too many legs, which embed themselves in trees. They feed off of the tree’s energy, and grow as part of the tree over time, eventually becoming a full Arborial, capable of ambulation, sight, and the consumption of other creatures. These juvenile Arborials can often be caught early if the undeveloped eye is identified. This is also the reason why Arborials come in a variety for every type of tree, including rumors of ones with access to magic relevant to their host tree.   In the event of a flood, they may opt to wait it out (potentially raising themselves above the waterline, simply drown as many plants would, or cause a rare event known as a Tree Stampede. A Tree Stampede is an extremely rare event in which dozens of Aborials attempt to outrun a flood. It is an event filled with the thumping of wooden limbs, splashing, and the so-rarely-heard shrieks of fearful Arborials. Such a sight would be considered humorous by some, with their lithe wooden bodies skittering in fear.   Arborials are more common in the east and north regions of the continents, with no recorded sightings of them any farther south than Fellington.
  • Subcategory: Plant
  • Wooden: This creature is very weak to fire damage, and will become flaming after any fire damage.
Elder Arborial: A matriarch tree turned Arborial, they are larger and stronger than regular Arborials. They are also known to coordinate other Arborials, increasing the threat they pose.   Darkvine: Appearing as a black vine, they will snatch unwary travelers, and drag them back to their central maw, where the vines converge.
  • Subcategory: Monstrosity
Flesh Slime (AKA Pink Slime): A pink fleshy blob, they absorb sentient beings to grow. Doing so also increases their magical ability, and powerful enough ones can disguise themselves as sentient beings in an attempt to seduce prey. Not a true slime.
  • Subcategory: Monstrosity
Muckform: A shambling monstrosity made from crude oil. Requires more advanced necromancy.
  • Categories: Undead, Monstrosity
Sapbeast: A shambling creature made of bark and vines, surrounding a core of pure growth magic. Despite its size, it is surprisingly stealthy and agile.
  • Categories: Arcane, Monstrosity
  • Sub-Categories: Arcanomorph
  • Size: Large
Taclebeast: A living mass of slender, pink tentacles,, which makes use of its surroundings to form a sort of armor. This armor varies based on its environment, usually being stone, though it may also be formed of the corpses of adventurers who met their demise. Some theorize it is actually a colony of smaller tentacle-like organisms. Taclebeasts have been known to drain the blood of their victims. Additionally, taclebeasts excrete a slimy fluid, which seems to keep their tentacles moisturized, and has a stickier variant used to attach armor, possibly composed of partially digested blood.
  • Size: Large to Huge
Inkform: An artificial approximate of a shadowform, composed of water thaumic energy and ink.
  • Categories: Arcane, Monstrosity
  • Sub-Categories: Arcanomorph, Artificial
The Swarm: A unique entity, of which only two instances have been recorded. It is a living hivemind, composed of whatever nearby creatures it can find. Widely regarded as a form domain creature, it absorbs other creatures, adding them to its swarm. Sufficiently absorbed creatures turn a dark indigo-ish gray, and are capable of turning to dust and back, even turning into other creatures within the swarm. The swarm itself appears as ambient particles of said dust, drifting or creeping over surfaces. It likely has a center, though none has been recorded.

The quote at the start was the perfect mood setter for what I was about to read. This is a really lovely monster you've conjured up, well done! I almost wish there was art of the little babies before they take over the trees that they choose as their hosts.

I'll probably make some someday, but for now just imagine those eye crab thingies from Subnautica, but green eyes
