Beasts

Musicite: A large wolf-like predator. They are almost completely silent, the only sound of their approach being a haunting tune that unsettles all who hear it. They have four yellow eyes.   Fireswine: A type of bioluminescent pig, they snort out licks of flame. Their spleens are often used as a light source. Uncommon livestock, native to the northern provinces. Their wild cousins are a force to be reckoned with.   Mountain Mouse: A domesticated fluffy rodent with a rapid reproduction rate. They are used almost exclusively to feed Pack Drakes.   _: 8-legged spider-like oxen. Rare livestock, used for towing carts. They possess “lungs” and an endoskeleton.   Cloudray: Airborne creatures similar to manta rays.   Sandsnipper: A small crustacean-like creature with 6 eyes, they are found in deserts. Their skin is almost identical in coloration and texture to the sand around them. They burrow during the day, and shortly before dawn hunt for small insects that feed on morning dew.   Bogmouth: A mysterious form, hidden beneath a tall stack logs. No one know what the creature itself looks like.

  Anglin: A floating anglerfish-esque bat-like creature. Native to the Below.   Torgudo: A large turtle-like creature, with a single eye. Its body is a sickly yellow, and its shell is spiked. They grow larger with age, and are said to live hundreds of years. They prey predominantly on slimes, as their sharp beaks can cut through them with ease.

  Brannage: A predator of oozes. Its mouth is a short trunk to drink oozes easily, but is ill-suited for anything else.   Western Alligator: Smaller and faster than most alligators and crocodiles. They spend little time on land, except to lay eggs. Unlike most alligators, they swim in pods, and are far less solitary. One to two meters long   Forest Fiend: A small, bipedal, creature that mimics moss or leaves .They have rough, almost wet skin, and near-reptilian eyes. They possess a pair of small forelimbs, and a very short tail and body. Prey of Arborials. They prefer dodging over defending.   Mistfiend: This loping, long-fanged monster can be found in plains. It can raise onto its hind legs, decreasing its mobility but allowing it to grasp and tear apart prey. Swarms of them are heralded by an encroaching fog cover. They are resistant to non-magical damage, though very weak against fire. They hunt in packs of 4 to 20.

  Glaninae: This oblong, quadrupedal beast makes its home in caves. It ensnares its prey with obscuring fog and paralyzing toxins, often ambushing them from above. Its fangs contain frost essence.
  • Size: Large
  Drowner (AKA Soupling): A tiny, red, amphibious monster that makes its home in marshes. They often band together in an attempt to drown larger prey. They are very weak to salt and certain herbs, which has led to locals nicknaming them “souplings”.
  • Size: Tiny
  Osni: A large, rare, quadrupedal creature that can be found in colder regions. Its front half is covered in thick white fur, which tapers into a thinner coat in its hindquarters. It attacks with slashing claws, powerful teeth, and a fiery tongue. Tales tell of someone once taming one and riding it into battle. Its tongue can be made into a powerful flame thaumic essence, powerful enough to create a Savant artifact.
  • Size: Huge, 3+ meters long, taller than a horse
  Light-hulk: A hulking, 6-eyed beast that dwells in lush valleys. It attacks with rapid blows and blinding light. They hunt in groups of 2 to 5   Jub-jub: A large flightless bird with a leathery hide. It is occasionally used as a mount, though more commonly used as a source of leather. It is named for the sound it produces.   Bandersnatch: A highly intelligent predatory beast, known for attacking the leader of a group first.   Rath: A green-skinned quadruped with a tough hide. Its head is piglike, and its body is partially armored.
  • Semi-Aquatic
  Tove: A large, badger-like beast with white fur. Found in colder regions, it has long hindquarters and large paws. They are known to sunbathe.   _: A long body with a wide mouth, almost like a viperfish, its batlike wings allow it to easily traverse the Below. It also has faint bioluminescent stripes, similar in color to Deep Lichen.

  Sandbeast: A large beast that is mostly a head, it lurks in sand dunes, its massive jaws closing like a fly trap around any prey.
  • Size: Large
  Bog Hog: A type of swine found in the western swamps of Arris.   Corpse Worm: A type of large worm that lays its eggs in corpses. A nasty surprise for many would-be graverobbers.
  • Size: Medium
  Crystal Tortoise: A large reptile native to the below, they bear a strong resemblance to tortoises, but their shells are coated in a layer of crystal. Juvenile ones have but a thin layer of this, whereas ancient ones have large clusters of crystal jutting from their backs. These crystals vary by region.

  Ruggen: A rat-like rodent of unusual size. They are quite viscous, and will eat almost anything. Commonly found in swamps, and (rather unfortunately) as pests in sewers.
  • Size: Medium
  Jinx: Large, predatory, feline creatures with purple patterns to their gray fur. Their razor sharp fangs can chew through wood and even metal. These teeth constantly grow, leading to jinxes habitually chewing on things, often weakening artificial structures. Additionally, their saliva is highly acidic. They are harmless nuisances till provoked. People claim they bring bad luck upon those who cross them.

  Razorfeather Hawk: A large bird with purple plumage. Its feathers are incredibly sharp, and it is capable of launching them at prey via force magic. Its heart can be made into a powerful thaumic force essence.
  • Size: Medium
  Desertfiend: A distant cousin of forestfiends, they are larger, more dangerous, and more wiry. Their tails, necks, and limbs are much longer, though their head remains the same as their cousins, if not smaller. They roam the hot steppe and deserts in packs, laying waste to larger creatures. They have been known to resort to cannibalism. Their skin is orange with brown stripes.

  Blaze Bear: A large bear found in northern regions, capable of generating flame.
  • Size: Large, 2.5 meters
  Echo Beast: A large predatory creature with blue eyes, they mimic sounds in order to disorientate prey. They have four limbs and a low posture, creeping through underbrush and along tree branches to catch their prey. Found in the Deep Forest.
  • Size: Large
  Gargantuan Frog: A truly massive frog with mottled green and brown skin that resembles moss growing on rock. They are found exclusively within the Deep Forest, more specifically they are usually found within the Deep Cloud Forest.
  • Size: Huge
  Deep Tortoise: A massive tortoise found in the Deep Forest. They never stop growing until they die, and it is unknown if they ever die of old age. Moss and even entire trees often grow upon their shells.
  • Size: Any
  Cloudgrazer: A cervine creature, they live in the Deep Cloud Forest.   Nimbus-Whale: A large, lighter-than-air creature. They feast upon aeroplankton.   Pard: A large feline found in Upper Arris. They have sanguine fur, incredibly sharp teeth, and a repugnant smell. They are thought to be related to leopards and lions, and are known to track prey for miles.

  Croaker: A close relative of hyenas, they are capable of mimicry to attract prey.
  • Size: Medium
  Stilt-deer: A long-legged species of deer found in swamps throughout Arris.
