The Bubble
The Bubble is the most advanced and successful of the many research stations placed along the border of the Sporelands. This thanks, in part, to the advanced bubble like barriers surrounding the facilities buildings. The bubbles are called Spore Shields, gaining their name from the method of their creation. A powerful reactor at the heart of the facility produces the shields using the high energy of the mutating spores that created the Sporelands. Although the barrier itself is not a solid obstruction, the energy given off by the shields mimics that of the spores, and the Sporelands themselves. This prevents the mutated creatures within from noticing and attacking the barrier. This allows the Bubble to be located just within the Sporelands themselves, and not just on the border, albeit still only on the very edges. Expansion to map and research the deeper parts of the jungle is on going.
Purpose / Function
The Bubble is a research station dedicated to studying the mutating effect of the Sporelands, and the creatures living within. As part of its duties, the Bubble also studies the diseases, bacteria, and toxins that come from the Sporelands, and work to create cures and antidotes. The Bubble is also used as a way to restrict the spread of contagions, and keep them in the jungle. Due to these unique qualities, the Bubble is the only facility that is equipped to treat individuals who become infected with whatever manages to slip into the rest of the continent from the Sporelands. The aim is to isolate, study, and treat these individuals, to simultaneously prevent further spread, and work towards a cure. If all else fails, the Bubble is equipped with several failsafes to dispose of infected material, before it has the chance to spread.
Alterations
As it has advanced, the Bubble has been equipped with several safety measures to deal with any possible dangerous situation that may arise from such close proximity to the Sporelands. This includes a fully stocked weapons system, and supplied panic shelter in case of the Spore Shield failing, an incinerator to dispose of infected material, and an airborne distribution system for a cure, in case infection is spread throughout the facility, as well as a lockdown sequence to prevent it from going further.
Architecture
The Bubble is comprised of multiple buildings, each connected by long hallway like passages. Each passage has an airlock at each end, with airtight doors and windows. Each building and connector has its own bubble, which are all powered by the main reactor. The inside is made of sterile surfaces, to prevent contamination. Each building has a unique purpose such as the observatory, the disease lab, the living quarters, etc. The exterior of the buildings is made of metal panels that absorb sunlight to power the facility, and are enchanted to camouflage with their surroundings. They are also extremely durable, and act as a physical barrier, as the Spore Shield is not solid. The main reactor is kept in it’s own building, and it is sustained by high energy spores. Expeditions to collect a replenishing supply of spores are required to sustain it.
History
The Bubble began as an ordinary research station, similar to the others located along the Sporelands border. However it was built, too close to the border, and despite its defenses, became overrun by mutated creatures. A few surviving individuals, including the head scientist and main investor of the lab, and his core research team. When they were forced to flee further into the Sporelands, they stumbled upon a Small grove of Spore Plants. Immediately after, their pursuers seemed unable to find them. After using a spore to safely escape the jungle, they began experimenting with it, and eventually created the Spore Shield, and established The Bubble.
Tourism
The Bubble is not available to the general public, although its existence is common knowledge. The Bubble is only open to existing researchers, and authorised personnel, as well as patients sent to them by hospitals in the main continent. Much of the research produced by the Bubble is available to the public in Libraries and archives, but there is much that is strictly classified as well.
