Reldan

The ethnic meta-group for the people of Reld, united by little besides the common language family and a few customs.   The Commonwealth of Reld is drawing on the common Reldan identity (based around the languages which they play up as a single language to help its cohesion). in reality the group is several separate languages. whether the Isthmus dialects are sufficiently different to be included or not is a matter for debate, and a dividing line between the Lavender and Bay caususes.   Questions:
  • what other commonalities are there culturally?

Culture

Average technological level

in Reld it is common - becoming more common the further east one goes - to carry loads with the head, either in pots/baskets balanced atop the head or on a tumpline.   Reld tends to use the Etneshkan Number System and associated angle measurements.

Common Etiquette rules

the traditional greeting involves touching one's own forehead, between the brows, with the right hand.   the main eating utensil in Reld is a pair of tongs - either X or < shaped - which are used to pick up food. most neighbouring regions use their hands as the primary eating tools. they can be made of bone, wood, or metal, and the tips can be Y, T, I, or O shaped depending on quality of item, type of food, and local custom.

Common Dress code

the fashion throughout the western region - as far as Felletoum and Sarlim - is for robes of wool or linen, typically in plain colours, with dense decorative pleats in complex concertina-like patterns on the fancier versions. visual excitement is added by brightly-coloured woven tabards with squareish geometric patterns, often depicting abstract representations of animals, plants, and people. This pattern breaks down in the eastern areas Emshol and Teytonol) however. Heavy leather or fur ponchos are worn in poor weather.
