Felletoum

Infusion: various fruits & vegetables   Felletoum is a large landlocked region in central Reld, sandwiched between a spur of the Benguyar Mountains and the fiery Molomet jungle.   nature overruns with fecundity here; fruits grow to the size of a man, or in such great quantity that they have to be fermented or preserved to be exported or left to rot. this is not to say that much work weeding, planting, trimming and is needed - the majority of the population, as in most places, is concerned with the task of gathering sufficient food to eat - but with reliability and considerable surplus, the land has grown wealthy and comfortable - though in the past it was frequently subject to raids from neighbouring areas.   the greatest naturally-occuring issue for the people of this land is the mysterious and unpredictable magical effects that sometimes arise in the foods grown here, caused by random infusions that the plants are especially susceptible to. unable to be replicated by deliberate techniques and very difficult to detect, entire regions may find that their fruits cause amnesia, their vegetables grant flight, or their produce suddenly catches fire. as the produce is perishable, and the infusions are not passed on to offspring, it is difficult to capitalise on these random effects.   though outsiders can find value in these chance effects, the locals - typically stolid, down-to-earth nobles treat such unpredictability and change as - in general - not worth the fuss.   Felletoum still has a sizable congregation for a variant of the Three-Roles Faiths, despite the attempts at conversion of Gyrist Witnesses since the region was incorporated into the Commonwealth of Reld. it now serves to fill the larders of the entirety of Reld, as well as exporting food far beyond those borders.

Ushandi Thicket:

the Southern part of Felletoum, which borders Lacrestand, The Jintvars, and Ulthoc Forest. the capital of this region, Illikoi, is a trade city for merchants flowing into the interior of the Commonwealth of Reld  four main characters, each of which are the local heads of a minor Order that agree to assist each other as they are understaffed and underfunded:
  • Ullulim the Lachrymose, AKA Lackey, the Mourner: From Retinol. her sister died in childbirth, and as part of the mourning process she takes her sister's new job. She works in Record-keepers and Historians - a role that involves a lot of censorship as well as overseeing education and carrying out actual historical research. the newest member of the four. uncovers tax evasion, or some other secret, through investigating their records.
  • Dohthis, the Retiree: a Lerin from Lerinim. possibly has a military background - certainly a champion wrestler. injury, age, or scandal let to them getting a sinecure in Miners, Qarriors and Jewellers. might have 3 underlings. soon after arriving, large amber deposits are found nearby, triggering a minor mining boom. this keeps Dohthis busy out in the hills. their duties include: overseeing assayers and assisting with levies on jewels (amber, amethyst, sigmenodan imports), inspecting quarries/mines and overseeing local disputes, chairing meetings of local members (with lots of recent sign-ups)
  • the Con artist: Either Zanarrolite or Halite. pretended their way into being the head of fishmongers, as an easy cushy job (as they're nowhere near the sea or large lakes). then, monsters start coming out of Ulthoc Forest and all the larger Orders defer on it, and so it ends up on her plate. she also enrages a fringe Father Deep cult, which threatens her life - she has a guard placed on her to protect and also to stop her fleeing.
  • the Local: from Ushandi. Runs the Forester, Hunters, and Trappers (which often leads to conflicts with landowners, as well as other butchery-adjacent orders). They secretly help hide a community of refugees from Ozcan Wilds.
all 4 are based in offices in the Governor's palace, a fairly new and sprawling building laid out according to the ideas of the Governor, their Architect, and the Order Principle. it has a fancy system for sending messages between departments using rolling tracks behind the walls and coloured oil-shell capsules. they roll down to the basement, where a bucket winches them up to a sorting and sending room in the rafters. this system is hated by those who use it, for the following reasons:
  • it takes ages to get a message to the room next door
  • balls can get lost, or stuck, or damaged - Tharmite crews are often sent up the tracks to fix them.
  • you can run out of balls, especially of a certain colour
  • the capsules limit the size and format of notes that can be sent
  • empty balls are returned all at the same time, in a designated slot each day
  • the tracks divide the building in two and limit where connections can be made between the two, making the layout somewhat annoying and confusing
  Questions:
  • what is/was the internal politics like? - peacable, violent? unified, scattered?
  • Fashion (for women): matching shorts and sleeveless doublets?
  • redo: Instead of randomly-magical fruit, have vast walled orchards and gardens to keep roaming "Scrumper" communities excluded. Standard military of this area are called Orchardguard. Possibly the food that grows in certain places is super specific, so a lot of food trading is required. More marginal lands lie outside these walls.
