New Caracar

A city built on top of, inside, and around the corpse of Caracar Itself, still important thousands of years after the Supplicancy's fall. the term also refers to the surrounding icy forests, cleared in places for farming and managed in others for lumber.

Demographics

Demi-Husks: infused with Chitin, this group is regarded as near-untouchable for their association with the wild Husks. they are allowed to do only the most undesired jobs.   Has a substantial slave trade, including one of the largest slave markets in the world.

Government

The city is broken into different districts, each of which is ruled absolutely by a different family and can have totally different laws than neighbouring areas. Although new districts form, combine, split etc over time as families merge, squabble, split and die out, the list below represents a fairly good overall image of the city. The city may have united by this time, were it not for the Whispers' continual efforts to play the districts against each other to stop them interfering with the whispers' schemes. This process has ebbed and flows over the centuries.

History

After Caracar fell, its essence seeped out into the frosty pewter-infused land of Tchep where it had died, infusing the land with forest and insect. The nearby tribes and the survivors of the fall together start trying to rebuild. over the later centuries, a large city grew up in, on, and around the immense corpse. Though the city claims descent from old Caracar – and as such, rightful rulership over the former empire – in actuality the connection from old institutions to new was broken within even the first decades of the city's formation, with only The Whispers surviving as a distinct (though very much changed) entity.

Geography

In form, the city is quite low-density, broken up by fields, woods, rivers etc. Insect-filled frosty forests surround the city for hundreds of miles, covering the former land of Tchep and extending beyond, with farms cut into the greenery. The whole area is plagued by Husks – chitin elementals that appear as giant insect parts "assembled incorrectly" (ie heads on the end of legs, mandibles rather than antennae, etc). they carry out bizarre, ritualistic, repeated actions that can be destructive, beneficial, or just plain mysterious. They are the source of the "work like a husk" saying, as well as forming an important motif in new caracaran theatre - as exemplified by Hahemir's Fabulists and Wits.   example husks:
  • Ankle-shearer - a large beetle body with wings and wingcases as normal. however, has a single large cricket leg at the back to haul it along the ground, and mismatched heads jutting from every leg-socket.
  • Three-wings:a bipedal beast with wing-cases instead of antennae that cover its head for use as a battering-ram. its maggoty body is covered in useless legs and other appendages, its main legs are cricket-like, and it has three fly-like wings along one side that flutter loudly but serve no other purpose.
  • an ant's head with legs instead of mandibles, with segments rising from the neck with mismatched antennae and mantis-limbs, topped off with a second head with stingers, mandibles, and sub-heads on legs that can thrash around wildly like a flail. an aggressive individual.
  • a centipede with wings instead of legs. lightweight because it's hollow.
