Hahemir's Fabulists and Wits

A group of touring entertainers, putting on everything from acrobatics and concerts to satirical plays across central Caracar and occasionally beyond. Based in the crowded Ovok Front district of New Caracar, they are most often found on tour - either by choice, or because their latest piece of satire has had them exiled from the city.   Though primarily a private business, they have a foot both in the world of crime and of revolutionary politics and justice, and have often found themselves caught up in wars, coups, revolutions and natural disasters at various times.   Members and shows:
  • Hahemir in green: the proprietor, chief playwright, and stage director, Hahemir also put up the funds to get the troupe set up. he uses his Greenflame magic to mold the flesh of his actors into the forms of public figures and rulers, archetypal characters, and gods and heroes.
  • Ibiro: centaur from the Sokani Archipelago, a former diplomat. an expert in various local politics, he assists Hahemir in writing political satires and the like (the real crow-drawers), as well as being a close friend and talented fighter.
  • satirical players: though they put on dramas and historical/mythological/religious performances, their focus and main draw is their satires on politics and society. For some plays, they use Lightcage backdrops created by Oomuri. these plays exist within he tradition of New Caracaran theatre, and make use of recurring motifs such as stage-hands dressed as Husks that offer elliptical and foreshadowing commentary between scenes as they work (sometimes with musical accompaniment). the Wits are unusual in using actual Demi-Husks as stage-hands.
  • stage-fights and tumblers, including a pair of beautiful male Mirrored reflection-dancers (who dance perfectly in synch and with great athleticism).
  • an apparently incompetent comedy-juggler who is, in fact, deadly with a throwing knife.
  • Performing Formicant: a Pangol exile.
  • Omboluc Ebb-Music Ensemble: a middle-brow draw, this "exotic" seven-piece band play the phase-based, trancelike music of their native Omboluc lagoon. suitable for both chin-stroking contemplation and getting incredibly high to.
  • herbalist: though not officially a Troupe member, this Poisonlands emigrant provides visitors and staff alike with intoxicants of dubious legality.
  • beasts of the world
  • Puppet show - from where? Edesenkol?
  • Security: possibly sisters from Edesenkol?
  • Zipline, hoist, and swings: rides. The zipline is typically affixed to the highest thing available; otherwise, a tall cable-braced pole is erected (taking advantage of the topology if possible). The hoist uses a pair of descending weights on long ropes, slung over two spaced poles, to fling riders into the air, where they swing excitingly too and fro. there are also large rope-swings.
  • Edesenkol Augur?
  • stalls selling food, nick-nacks, and the like.

Culture

The basic structure of (new) Caracaran narrative is a sextet: a trio, a duo, and a singleton. All members of a group must appear in each scene together - though their entrances and exits may not perfectly coincide, especially in more Outre work.
  • Actors are thought of as part of, say, a Duo, and nearly always play Duo roles, usually with a set duo partner, for much of their career
  • Possibly the actors' real-world relationships are meant to be known to the audience and inform/influence the viewing of the show - a bit like wrestling or soap operas. These relationships become somewhat constructed as a result - Cf. Nidari duelling rivalries
  • Hahemir is unusual in his devotion to the strict formal old versions of the rules, and also in not indulging the backstage drama that he sees as a needless distraction from the original form.
  • Husk stage-hands spout quotes "at random" - from literature, current events, from the past and future (hidden foreshadowing) of the current play - can provide comedic/satirical contrast, colour, foreshadowing.
  • Characters wear bright colours to help the audience tell which character archetype they belong to. Coloured banners with symbols are unveiled (like flip-charts) high above the stage to indicate mood and other commentary, especially to the people at the back. These banners can be part of the foreshadowing/messaging/jokes of the Husks as they are cleared away.

Public Agenda

  1. stay afloat
  2. make people laugh
  3. tell truth to power
  4. change lives for the better

Assets

  • sleeping-tents, wagons, and beasts of burden
  • costumes, backgrounds and props

History

  • Founded by Hahemir in green.
  • Hahemir was safe in new Caracar for a while because he always portrayed the whispers as useless and out of date/touch, which they appreciated as it diffused any dislike from leftfield actors. Once he realised the truth, he could no longer be allowed to remain.
