Omboluc lagoon

Infusions: salt/brine, crabs, electricity   A core region of the Commonwealth of Reld, Omboluc Lagoon is also among the strangest - a salt-riddled, lightning-crackling inlet inhabited by eccentric mages.

Culture:

the lagoon lacking much dry land, alternatives to conventional fire-based technology needed to be found. this was brine-channelling, the practitioners of which became the lynchpin of lagoon society.   brine-channelers are encourages to experiment broadly, even if the effects of their experiments are disastrous. uniqueness, novelty, avoiding repetition and drudgery are all hallmarks of Lagooner culture. they are often brilliant, restless, and innovative, but also slapdash, inattentive and reckless.   The most popular cultural export of Omboluc is the phase-like local music called "flow music", "tide music", or "ebb music". although the artform of the common folk in Omboluc, it is more commonly regarded as an exotic novelty or a highbrow interest in other regions. common instruments:
  • Tumblers: sets of tuned rain-makers (different sized chambers and pebbles/gravel/sand), they act as a mixture of percussion and drone
  • hand-drums
  • The Turerla/Tura, a family of musical instruments based around hanging ceramic bells that are struck with wooden or felted mallets – mostly varied in terms of pitch range. Part of the standard Ebb Music Ensemble, but also seen in many other contexts, in particular in a 2-4 musician group accompanied by transverse-blown xun (also in Ebb music ensembles). Found across a wide range of regions around where it originated (Emsh, Felletoum, Caracar?). Tend to play a baseline/melody (sometimes both) or else two-note chords. A transverse-blown xun-like musical instrument (edge-blown ocarina) - sometimes with several chambers.
  • a stringed instrument a little like a mandola, used to play chords.

Trade, industry, and diplomacy:

the lagoon has long had a close relationship with Tharm, exchanging building materials, food, and other supplies for centuries, forming the original heart of the Commonwealth of Reld. Tharmite mechanics, their most advanced apparatus, would not work without Brine-electricity.

Brine-Channellers

Brine-channellers are manipulators of salt in solution for various effects. use brine with zinc and copper rods (which are consumed) to wield lightning, and are widely employed as living artillery . often use claw-tipped instruments to channel their lightning. they also use their devices to power Tharmite mechanics, and can fuse and encrust objects to create physical objects. finally, it is in popular demand for turning salt water into fresh in regions where no other supply exists.

Geography

there is little dry land in the lagoon, and what is there is rendered barren by the presence of so much salt. the water, however, is rich with specialised life, and rarely deeper than 8-10 metres.

Fauna & Flora

distinctive creatures:
  • crabs
  • electric eels, torpedo rays etc
  Demographics:
  • crabmen
  • Halite
  • Nidari - though the salt content is too high for them to survive long-term in the water.

Natural Resources

  • plenty of salt and electricity
  • strange metals and other chemicals dissolved in the water.
