Showing My Resolve

General Summary

Returning to his roots, Captain Savin Senriel gathered some old friends and set sail on the high seas! While Grud slept off a hangover, Lord and Lady Wyvernspur-Strongheart joined the crew to map new lands to the West. A drop of Nelson's blood to combat the cold didn't hurt the crew's spirits, too.   Thanks to Tiff's spells, Savin and Grud were able to stay up all night to keep watch, while Rico decided to rough it in one of the ship's boats. (Most husbands actually have to upset their wives to sleep in the doghouse, but Rico was all to happy to leave his beloved to read with her new friend, Lia.) After seeing shapes and explosions of water on the horizon all night, fleeing sahuagin troops and their megalodons ran afoul of Savin's boomstick and Grud's blade. Impressed by the dispatch of their sworn enemies, the pursuing sea elves and their leader rose to the surface to speak with the Captain in Common, no less. Declaring themselves masters of the sea, the elves told him to return the way he came, for they would not suffer the possibility of supplies falling into the hands of the sahuagin. Savin, remembering an old bracelet he once had, asked if there was a way to prove themselves, and was granted a quest to acquire the help of the darfellan against their shared enemy. While the sea elves made clear that their grant of passage to Savin did not threaten them since mortals were so temporary, they warned him they were were not interested in making deals with any of the ever-changing nations of Pandora. Happy to help, with one orc-sized exception, the crew set off to find the darfellan among the cliffside caves of Devil's Crag.   Avoided by the stryx, the darfellans were intrigued by the newcomers and invited them into the caves, but not before Savin managed to damage the skiff on the sharp rocks. Tiff's attempt to fly up had the darfellan mistake her for a stryx momentarily until they were corrected. One darfellan was familiar with the Gond-worshiping darfellan Savin had met 5 years earlier, and had learned Common from them. Acting as interpreter, he explained that the chief would not pledge his people unless the newcomers proved themselves agains a worthy opponent, sending them to fight the scyllan guarding the mouth of the Crag. Not willing to risk his ship to the sharp rocks and tight quarters, the party entered the mouth of the slough and baited the creature out. Its tentacles flailed but found no purchase on the party enhance by freedom of movement, and the water's hazardous depths proved no difficulty with their flying and water breathing. Even when its mate showed up and threatened to drag Rico to a frozen grave, Tiff teleported in a Grud, saved herself, and healed Rico. They returned with a head, and traded a tooth for a stryx talon, sealing the deal.   Returning to the sea, the sea elf woman met them again, riding her giant coral crab. She offered a bracelet made from the coral reef of their hidden capital to the Captain and each of his officers. Grud took the bracelet and threw it away, for a champion of Gruumsh sees with only one eye. She offered him some advice in Aquan before sinking beneath the seas,"er Ășa nos beleriol," but the orc dismissed it, even after hearing Tiff's translation, "One without a tribe drowns alone." (Since sea elves are never disloyal and can't drown, the implication was clear: rejecting friendship is rejecting oneself.)   Having received a flash of insight after defeating the wielder of the Fiendkiller's Flail, Grud asked Tiff for some help with a ritual binding the head of Eventide to his legacy item, Ancestral Juju. She agreed on the condition that he let her make a copy of Nihilus' journal, and they teleported to West Haven, only to find the city's gnolls rioting. While Tiff made her copy, Grud went to the heart of the gnoll population: Death Dells Tavern, disguised as the source of their rioting: Duurk, orc champion of Yeenoghu, apparently risen from the grave. After encouraging the gnoll patrons to leave and do more slaughter in the demon prince's name, Grud bartered with the bartender, Barry, for some elf maiden blood, in exchange for enough money to buy the bar now that its owner was dead. Returning the next morning for the blood, Grud encountered a beaten Barry and a gloating Mavron Mews, who did not want the bar to change hands to someone more responsible as he made so much money off its patrons. Grud, expressing his nonchalance despite Barry's pleas, agreed to leave the bar in Mews' hands in exchange for the blood and left to dig up a grave.   Convinced Grud's return from the dead was simply her Arch-Priest's plan, the high priestess did nothing but watch as Grud buried Eventide's head in a desecrated grave of an intelligent undead and anointed it with the blood and gold dust. The ritual caused the head to shrivel into a porcelain doll's head and let out an unearthly scream, her tears hardening on her face. As the banshee screech died down, however, it revealed another yell, that of a male from inside The Dusk Chapel for a moment. Grud accepted the doll's offer of power and granted his "mother" a kiss, even while the voices of his friends and family began to chant their disapproval in his head.
