Crown of the Kobold King, Part 8

General Summary

His minions slain and (most) of his sacrifices rescued, the Kobold King was nothing if not a true believer. So when the rescue party stepped over the piles of lizard corpses and confronted him, Merlokrep offered them to join in the feast and let the pink-skins be sacrificed. A gutteral cry went out and it was honestly uncertain whether it came from the mouths of Kerrdremak's kobolds or the party. In any case, a fierce battle happened and Richter gave and received many blows thanks to the King's Man-Feller, but it was Merlokrep who fell in the end. As he died, he warned them of the coming darkness, the same that drove his people from the depths.

"Well that's ominous."

Taking the crown from the fallen king's broken body, the party investigated the adjoining chambers and discovered the Queen, She-Who-Is-Allowed-to-Nag-His-Majesty, the young blue kobold Vreggma. She immediately set her sights on Richter, and took a liking to his big sword. However, when Gwen demanded she submit to justice and give up her stolen jewels, she drew a dagger and attacked viciously. The party quickly restrained her and put her in manacles, and moved on to the final ritual chamber, where Jekkajak awaited.

Unfortunately, the mad prophet plunged his dagger, Heartripper, into Edgrin's ally, practicing for the child next. The ancient white-scaled kobold sent his entourage to attack the party immediately, and a few of his strikes hit true, but the party moved in quickly enough to stop his spellcasting. The kids helped, too, throwing rocks at the old lizard despite Gwen and Richter's commands, and they saw Hollin was safe just as the kobold fell, his own heart stopping. Edgrin mourned the loss of his friend, making him the last of the Gray Eagles adventuring party, and the party and some of the older children helped carry the body out of the dark place and back to town. While Richter addressed the part of the tribe that helped him, swearing to return and finish liberating the rest, Gwen gathered the gold and the queen, and Garth and Nightlock collected the remaining loot. The children safe, Thuldrin Kreed granted them all a substantial reward, and the party eventually identified the mysterious magic items they had collected from the king and his priest.

To this day, the children of Falcon's Hollow sing a song in their honor while jumping rope, though it's said the true origin of the earworm was the kobolds who rose up against their tyrannical king.
