Crown of the Kobold King, Part 5
General Summary
Following the scent of Jurin with Gwen's bloodhounds led the party into a chamber dominated by an ancient well, but as soon as they entered the chamber, kobolds lying in wait jumped out of the well and attacked, led by a dark talon hunter. Garth made his return to the party felt with a well-placed color spray and the blind, stunned, and unconscious enemies were easy pickings.
To the south, they heard arguing voices, and after a few diplomatic overtures, they convinced the kobolds to open the door and join their cause. Kerrdremak shared the sad story of the Truescale Tribe, that Merlokrep had put out his own eye with his crown, and that they were all being forced to get more shiny good-good for his queen, Vreggma. He shared a prophecy about the tribe uttered by Jekkajak, their shamman, "He Who Forgets More Than You or He Knows":
“When the Doomed King sits the Throne,
our great tribe merk-merks its last! To save
our people, wash our troubles from the
crown with the blood of pink-skin-spawn!”
Kerrdremak's blue kobolds agreed to guard the elevator while the party proceeded. Beyond the chamber were smoke-filled tunnels that burned their lungs and was guarded by an eerie orange light, a hellhound. Seeking the source of the smoke, the party left Richter to deal with the beast and at the end of the tunnel found an undead hammering away at another link in the chain barbed and bound to him. The boy was tied up and knocked out, but alive. The other children rushed in to retrieve Jurin, but this angered the forge-spurned who pulled all the smoke into his lungs and released it as hot ash, burning and blinding everyone. After the children were recovered, Richter and Gwen pushed the dogs to attack and found the enemy difficult to destroy, but eventually prevailed. Taking up the adamantine hammer it wielded, several of them took turns destroying the cursed chain and the undead crumbled into dust. Kimi, Mikra, and Jurin all saved, the party knew there were at least two more children to find before their quest was complete...
