An Exploration of Royal Proportions
General Summary
Evette organized an expedition to explore the frigid lands to The North, starting in Ulm's Outpost. Malen, Lorenzo and Arcturus answered her call and they took passage north with The Cornered Rat, who happened to be sailing north on a trading expedition. After an uneventful sail, they arrived in Ulm's Outpost to find it far more built up than the last time Evette was there.
After some discussion with Ulm about her intentions, Evette managed to get permission to explore the lands as long as the party was able to bring back an elk for food and to eliminate the threat of a wolf in the area. The next morning they set out and came across a lone megaloceros, a great elk. The killed it, and while preparing to drag it back to the outpost, were attacked by a winter wolf, drawn to them by the smell of blood. Despite a frigid welcome from the wolf, they were able to kill it as well, and Arcturus took off its head as proof. Evette used a piece of the wolf's hide to magically create a map to what the wolf felt was its greatest treasure. Returning to Ulm's Outpost in success, they feasted and drank the night away.
The following day they returned out into the tundra, following Evette's map. They discovered the den of the winter wolf, and its slaughtered babies. In the cave they also found the remains and valuables of several hunters from Ulm's Outpost, including a crudely drawn map which revealed to them the size of the land they had started to explore. They passed back through Ulm's Outpost on their way north and remembered to make sure that The Cornered Rat and its crew would remain there long enough for them to explore for a while and return. That done, they finally headed north.
After a couple days of wandering through the frigid north, they decided to turn toward the looming, massive volcanoes they could see dominating the skyline to the west. Upon arrival, they discovered a strange plant none of them had ever seen before. It appeared to be a flower with a stem made of obsidian, with leaves and flowers glowing the colour of lava. Evette, Lorenzo and Malen made the hazardous climb toward where these flowers were sprouting out of the lava flow, picking several of them to study. While they were observing the flowers, they were attacked by a magma elemental. It managed to vomit up lava on Evette, burning her quite well, before Arcturus gave it the business and ended the threat.
Their time running short before the ship would leave, they decided to head back so they would not be stranded on this new (to them) continent. As they sailed back, they observed that the flowers were starting to lose their glow. In a desperate attempt to learn more about them, Lorenzo ate one of the flowers, finding that he no longer felt the cold and that he could spit fire! Among the 10 flowers they picked, they found six seeds. Through much thought and extrapolation, they figure that they might grow if planted in constant flame.
