The Dreamweavers Curse, Session 1 Report

General Summary

After saving his brother, Benedict and his newly found compatriots Percy and Preston leave the Bellows and The Coast of Pearls behind, and head for the capital of Fratania; Jadetown.
On their way through the city streets they encounter the scene of a murder. Surrounded by local guards, a detective they would come to known as Morgan Helldrin, expects a headless corpse. The corpse is dressed in a guards uniform, missing his ID, with three stab wounds, and his head crushed in. Morgan notices the curious strangers, and decides to trust them - for seemingly unknown reasons. He asks them to buy him a drink later, at the Plenum Plaza Hotel. They agree and split ways.
The group arrives at the center of town, the platinium plaza. With the large mine in the center. On the opposite side lies the Plenum Plaza, where both the town hall and various embassies stand. The plaza is filled with protesters, both for and against the upcoming decision of what to do with the refugees. On the steps up to the Townhall, they notice an individual dressed in black leather. He is wearing a gasmask of some kind shaped in the beak of a crow, with neon green linses that almost glows. His dead gaze is patrolling the crowd and beyond. He is one of Verlin's Hands  Edmund is stable, and with the various medicins given by Oruk the Shaman he seems to be holding on. Benedict leads the group towards the local hospital, and places him in the care of the busy doctors and nurses paying a rather small sum in exchange.
Before checking in at the hotel, the group splits. Benedict looks for a blacksmith to fix up the old, if not ancient, armour that he acquired beneath the ruins of Yasol, while Percy and Preston takes a minute to explore the local library.
On his way out of the store, Benedict notices a stranger on his tail. A younger man dressed in street clothes, watching him inconspicuously. Curious, Benedict slips him a note with a hastily written address for the hotel, and asks the guy to meet with him later in the bar.
Meanwhile Preston is immediately infatuated with the old dusty tomb for books, where he meets the librarian tortoise who shows him around. In the back he discovers a locked compartment containing a plethora of ancient material and literature. He persuades the librarian to open it, from where he delves into an old tome with a cover made of stone and old dwarven ruins. ''Manual of Health''. It seems the tome is enchanted with some kind of magic only usable once every 7th year, that allows the reader to enhance their constitution. Percy is quickly bored, and leaves his brother to read while he heads for the hotel.    One by one they all meet up at the Plenum Plaza Hotel, with Preston sadly unable to buy or finish the manual of health. In the large upstairs bar, the three of them look about them, and perceive an old Githzerai sitting at the bar fiddling with a notepad and a beer. They also spot a young dwarven women, with a long red haired braid, diamond like features, and somewhat used if even dirty clothes. She is reading a book, subtly scanning the room around her.
Finally their gazes rest on a curious conversation just out of ear-range. A human man in a bowler hat and black blazer is subserviently listening to a dwarf sitting across from him. The dwarf has a beautiful wellkept brown beard adorned with rings of gold and silver. He is playing with a red cain at his side, and is wearing a nice blue shirt and blazer.
A minute or so later they are done, and the dwarf rises up to leave with his bodyguard resting on a stool nearby. On their way out Benedict and Percy intercepts them with a couple of questions. They learn that the mans name is Torcall Zurich, current patriarch of one of the founding families of the republic. Benedict tries to strike a deal with the man, to benefit the trade of his family, but quickly learns that Torcall has already agreed to a trade deal with Benedict's family's primary competition; The Azlan Corporation. In fact the prince of the Azlan Corporation, Damian Azlan, is in town. Benedict still manages to convince Torcall to schedule a meeting for the next day at 2pm.    As Torcall walks away, the stranger that Benedict invited walks in, and the group invites him to sit at their table. They learn his name is Vincent, and that he is a local thief. He just so happens to be the exact type of person they are looking for.
Preston asks him to steal the book from the library, while Benedict and Percy ascertain wether he would be able to help them undermine the reputation of this Damian Azlan, preferably to a degree that would help Benedict strike a better deal with Torcall and secure a large portion of the platinium trade. Vincent - after learning the potential earnings and future collaborations - confidently agrees.
Finally the detective shows up. He sits down among them after getting his whisky on the rocks, and very indiscreetly talks about the murder. He says that his hands are tied, that the police officers and captains are unwilling to call it anything but another politcal incident involving socialist factions. The officer killed was wearing a small pin, with the initials FF, Free Fratania, and was apparently involved in local socialist politics. This was enough for the detectives superiors to have a rapport written and call it a day. He very ''subtly'' hints that he wishes that ''somebody'' would do something. Somewhere out there, there is a murderer running around with a police ID, to what use, is anyones guess.    After he leaves, the group set their plans in motion to ruin the reputation of Damian Azlan, first step is to break into his hotel room. Benedict cleverly persuade the receptionist to tell him the room number, while Vincent sneaks into the personal quarters and steals a housekeeper uniform. Vincent alongside Percy then both go to the room disguised by various means, only to find out that Damian is not home. They pick the lock and rummage through his things. They find a strange address written on a small piece of paper, along side the trade deal contract which seems off in many ways.
A bit confused they decide to follow up on the address and quickly find themselves in the middle of the night on the outskirts of the industrial sector of town. Here the address leads them to what seems to be a completely abandoned factory building. They sneak in, no sound, no light, only to discover the locked door stands open. They peak inside, no reaction, nothing. Then Benedict turns on his lantern and the light illuminates two people creepily standing in the dark looking at them. Damian, and some unknown purple-skinned tiefling that Vincent recognises as Josh, some local dealer working for an underground boss named Coaleyes.
Damian tries to persuade them that nothing is wrong, it's just a simple drug deal. The group, not buying into the lie, slowly approach weapons at the ready. Damian warns them that they should leave now. Still not listening they draw their weapons, just as some strange physiological magic takes hold on Benedict crushing down on his thoughts, making a small strip of blood trickle from his nose. Then all hell breaks loose, as a group of giant rats with a series of smaller swarms, crawl through the floorboards and wall crevices.
They fight for their lives, some almost going cold, as they feel their brains melting under some unknown effect, but they finally manage to kill Damian by lighting him on fire. But as he falls over screaming in pain, something breaks through his skull. A brain with four legs crawls out and jumps Benedict. Out of the corner of his vision, he sees Percy who casts a quick spell and jumps inhumanly high through the air, aims his gun and fires at the brain. It explodes mid air, covering both of them in brain-matter. They kill Josh next, also under the control of a similar brain creature, kill it before it escapes, and destroy the rest of the rats, and once again are smothered by the suffocating silence of the night. They search the room, finding a series of blood marks being pulled towards the base of one of the large chimneys. They stand at the edge, looking down into the void. The bottom of the chimney having been dug out leaving an endless hole instead. The blood marks end at its edge.
Not willing to deal with that now, they leave.
The next morning, Vincent attempts unsuccessfully to steal the Manual of Health. While the rest of the group wake up to the news that the Patriarch of the Parlmarks, Jonathan Parlmark had been killed in a socialist revolt the night before, now leaving his son in charge of the family, still a young boy. The headlines then shows a picture of the boy being comforted by Torcall Zurich, who is quoted in saying that whoever is responsible will be brought to justice. This changes the coming decision regarding the refugees, as it is now no longer two against two, making the outcome unpredictable. The choice mainly resting in the young boys hands.
The group then attends to various matters throughout the morning, selling some wears to the Pawnbroker Jeramia, and generally goes from shop to shop. Percy then discovers an old printers shop for sale, and is intrigued.
At 2pm they all head for the Zurich estate, swarming with activity and guards. They are invited into the living room, where the dwarf is attending to some business. Benedict, with the help of Percy, attempts to convince the Patriarch, that Damian is a drug user and completely unreliable. The dwarf then vaguely states that maybe Benedict should take a closer look at his funds before attempting to make a deal of this magnitude. ''You have my respect for coming here... but maybe get your affairs in order first, before we meet again. For I do hope we meet again.''
As soon as the meeting is over, Benedict rushes to the embassy to confirm his fears. The money is gone, spend on who knows what. His father have wasted it.
Meanwhile Percy and Preston goes to the Townhall to get a deal regarding the printer shop, striking a deal for 500 gold, with the transaction and paperwork being ready within the week.    Puzzled they all find each other at the Plenum Plaza bar, they pay their bills, check out and head for the train station... But something concerns them still. The strange bottomless pit in the abandoned factory, the awful creatures that crawled out of the skull of Damian and Josh. Are there more of them? Where does the hole lead? What lies beneath their very feet?
They look upon one another, Benedict, Percy, Preston and Vincent, they cannot leave it behind. They make the journey south through the industrial sector, open the rusty doors of the factory and stand at the edge of the chimney. Looking into the void, the unknown nothingness...
