The Living Infinite - "The Maelstrom Mistress"

The Maelstrom Mistress was once a shapeshifting woman named Yvonna. Following the death of the elder gods that began the period known as The Ruination, this woman dedicated her pursuits to enacting plans for ascension into divinity following their absence. Sundering the tree Yggdrasil from the plane of Ysgard, Yvonna enacted a ritual of rebirth to complete her apotheosis, making her dwelling the Roots of Chaos within the sundered realm of Ysgard known now as The Maelstrom, a cosmic whirlpool in the infinite void that separates the worlds and dimensions of the universe.   Many theologians believe the ascension of this void goddess to be the catalyst that began the end of The Ruination, and the creation of new gods that followed, though most doubt she had a direct hand in their births. While the true form and nature of this god is likely ever-changing, the Living Infinite’s supposed origins as a woman lead its followers and those familiar with it to often refer to it as feminine. As attestations of her true form are unreliable at best and accounts of her mortal form limited to mad swamp folk tales, the name sticks mostly as a method of personifying and humanizing a being of chaos.   Depictions of the Living Infinite vary wildly and are often dramatized interpretations, rather than concrete. Some murals depict a dark haired woman from the waist up being eaten by a lower half of snakes overlapping and consuming each other. Others are Ouroboros of scintillating colors. Some depict a white tree, rotted with serpents devouring its fruit and gnawing on its branches.
Areas of Concern: creation, destruction, rebirth, chaos, space and time   Divine Realm: Roots of Chaos; The Maelstrom   Alignment: Chaotic Neutral   Typical Follower Alignments: CG, N, CN, CE   Edicts: encourage creativity, except what you cannot control, change the world   Anathema: needlessly extend something’s existence or lifespan, ignore portents of the future   Doctrine and Beliefs: Those who worship The Living Infinite are not ones to hold scripture close to their heart. These worshippers believe in few edicts, such as “Everything is permitted, the only constant is change.”   Worshippers: the Mistress's greatest followers are the Proteans, inscrutable serpentine beings of chaos that bend not to good or evil, but that seek to act with zeal against order, stability, and stagnation as the Mistress demands it. Though the Maelstrom Mistress possesses a sizable amount of worship from mortals, many worshippers of her keep their faith a secret and gather in secret to avoid persecution by the hands of prejudiced peers and authorities. Tyrants and strict governments ban the open worship of the Mistress, fearing her followers to be anarchists and agents that would undo the stability or power they possess.   In truth, very few devotees of the Mistress ever receive blessings of divine nature from her or receive direction at all, and many that do are often unaware of the Mistress’s goals for her subjects. In most cases, their divine gifts often disappear once they have completed a task for her that they never knew existed, appearing to have just lost their divine powers out of nowhere.   Among common mortals though, many artists and craftsmen dedicate their faith to the Mistress. In their faith they find her as inspiration and a muse to create works of art beyond the conventions and standards of their peers, advancing and rapidly changing their culture. Inventors and philosophers seek new ideas in their dedications, however they must moderate their pursuits lest they begin a slow descent into madness.
