Nexia - "The Sanguine Queen"
Nexia is the Sanguine Queen, Lady Nocturne, and her personal favorite moniker, the Bloody Whore. She is the goddess of blood and beasts, of addictions and of appetites. She is the patron of creatures that hunt in the night, of blood-hungry men, women, and monsters alike. Nexia is primarily a goddess of indulgence, taken to a terrifying end. While some patrons or mystics might preach against fearing the dark or the unknown, Nexia's desire her followers to be the things feared in the dark.
The Sanguine Queen is a goddess of fulfillment of desire by physical indulgence, and the gradual perversion of harmless acts into vile ones. She stirs the hunger of newly converted vampires, werecreatures that fight against their savage nature, and tempts the minds of addicts into seeking new heights. Undead flock to Nexian worship to sate their void-born hunger, and Velstrac pledge their loyalties to the goddess as well.
Nexians are a particular problem for many societies, as the goddess finds conversion to be rather easy whether it be among the poor or the wealthy, usually for different reasons. The associations she claims with hedonism, wild beasts, and challenging conventions allows many Nexians to masquerade as harmless followers of the goddess Elyndra. For this fact alone, followers of the Wildwood Trickster consider Nexians to be marked for death. Some Elyndrans dedicated their lives to hunting Nexians, with the most experienced attempting to do so with their goddess's preferred method of trickery. Many Nexian noblemen have been cast down by their own betters or citizens without an arrow or blade ever being drawn on them.
Nexia is depicted as a scarlet-haired humanoid woman of svelte shape and with sharp, attractive features. Usually, the artist depicts her with some alien or monstrous quality that hints at an insidious creature within, such as blood-soaked fangs, long claws for nails, a single serpentine eye, or severed mortal bits in a drink like a lemon in tea. She is often seen in these depictions among mortal companions, or if not, accompanied by various small beasts that follow her like doting familiars. Nexia in the flesh is as beautiful as she is terrible, a regal figure adorned with a glowing halo of blood that always appears behind her head according to the viewer's perspective.
Areas of Concern: blood, night, monsters, shapeshifters, indulgence, vampires, cannibalism Divine Realm: Palace of Dark Desire, Shadow Plane Alignment: Neutral Evil Typical Follower Alignments: Any evil, very rarely neutral Edicts: Drink blood, push the boundaries of pleasure and pain Anathema: Deny your appetites, allow a plea for mercy alone to sway you Doctrines and Beliefs: Nexia’s most prominent teachings to her followers are based on the concept of one finding and achieving peace of mind. All goals one has in life, whether they be one’s work, a family with children, wealth & status, or power and more are meant to achieve peace of mind. In the holy scriptures of “The Sanguine Path”, Nexian’s believe that they and their goddess are on the path to enlightenment and peace of mind through the indulgence of their dark desires in a world that largely rejects them. Despite this Nexians are not prone to exhibiting entirely antisocial behavior like a follower of Atropus or Ahriman out of some form of misanthropic hatred. Nexia and her followers have no use (or even contempt) for the common family man, but they will hurt him if their hunger demands or their whims desire it. These inhibitions are of course typically absent in vampires, werebeasts, and such that often indulge in these activities as well. However, Nexia is often seen as a nurse or matron-figure to werebeasts or newly-converted vampires that have yet to indulge in their vice or reject them, tempting them into the Sanguine Path to find peace from the aching hunger that will only bring them pain the longer they choose to ignore it. Indulging in one’s hunger is the most natural state of being for even the most simple of lifeforms in the universe, and to a Nexian, to ignore their hunger for flesh and blood is tantamount to abstaining from water as a normal man. Worshippers: Nexians are often split into two groups, those more monstrous and those more humanoid. Of the monstrous sort there are creatures of the night such as Vampires, Werebeasts, and the fiendish monsters known as the Velstrac. Entire clans and hierarchies formed in these groups often dedicate themselves to the worship of Nexia. Other intelligent undead besides Vampires also find patronage in Nexia. The Nocturne Lady would not turn down a lich's hunger for knowledge, even if there is usually less blood involved. Amongst humanoids however, Nexians can most often be found in urban environments, navigating through high society in hedonistic cults or gatherings with the intention of satiating their hunger and to gain new followers for the Sanguine Queen. Conversely they are also most likely to be found in low society preying on vulnerable groups like beggars, or converting addicts and other violent outcasts onto the Sanguine Path.
