Evelyn Woods

Written by Panda Overlord

Sorcerer Evelyn Aria Woods (a.k.a. Lyn)

Evelyn Woods had always loved her golden eyes. Her mama told her it came from her papa, that it was just like his. Any reminder of him she hoarded with jealous abandon, anything to remember her loving papa, who was gone. She had no idea.   Evelyn Woods hated her eyes. Any memento of him made her nauseous. He had no right to anything in her life, and she hated looking in a mirror just to see the pools of molten gold. Her exotic hair simply made it awful, a twisting sensation in her gut that forced her head to spin and her vision to blur. Seeing it on her little brother, Val, was worse.   Evelyn Woods was terrified of her eyes. What it meant- for her, for Val, for the world- chilled her to the bone. The implications knotted her stomach and forced her to her knees. She refused to fall. There was no time; she had to save Val, destroy the homunculi, stop Maverick.   It always came back to Maverick, even though nothing was ever that simple.   She made the mistake to believe in simplicity, in black and white, only twice. The first cost her body and Val’s. The demon’s deal she made in a poor attempt to steal a soul from Death was naive- she knew that now. The second was when she slipped, she grew too confident in her abilities, didn’t keep constant watch on the effect of her actions like she should have. It nearly cost her life before she got Val back- and that was unacceptable.   Those two moment in her life were the only times she had met Death. They were two moments too many. It was terrifying. Reuniting with her father and learning of his betrayal was almost paltry in comparison. If Evelyn was honest, she felt more rage and horror than fear when she thought about how her father believed himself worthy of her family’s love after walking away from them, and their loyalty after destroying an entire civilization in an attempt for power.   Evelyn could forgive her father for the latter transgression, even if she would never admit it. Val, though, Val was destroyed at the understanding that their father did that. His giant, loving heart was the perfect contrast to her own. Val loved the broken, cruel world that would tear his heart to pieces one day, and she dreaded that moment. His love was the steady stream near their childhood home, trickling gently over smooth rocks.   Evelyn was the opposite. She loved few, and cared little for the rest, but those she deemed worthy of her affection and loyalty she loved with the fierce unrelenting qualities of a roaring wildfire. Destructive and powerfully protective in equal measure; it was all too easy to burn. People were bundles of dry twigs in her heart, everyone she loved destroyed and crumbling to ash in turn, no matter how she tried to temper her flames. Only Val remained, and oh how she clung to him because of it.   The sky was blue, grass was green, and Evelyn Woods loved Valero.   Only his constant, flowing love was able to withstand her burning heart. One consequence was that nowhere but with Val did she feel like she was home. Without him, her ardent passion was left adrift, consuming everything in its wake yet forever unfulfilled. Inevitably, her heart and mind turned on herself, twisted and destructive in its fervor. All it left in its wake was ash and dust, demolishing everything in sight and more, leaving nothing untouched.   Sometimes, when she was left to her own thoughts and her traitorous mind, Evelyn believed that it was only a matter of time until Val, too, was taken by her relentless personality. She could never regret loving him, yet her last view of her precious, wonderful little brother was his horrified expression as he reached out, being dragged into his own portal to return to everyone. She smiled, even as her body screamed as Death took her Mark, ripped it from her soul.   Evelyn Woods smiled, and then she knew no more.
