Aarakocra

The aarakocra, also known as birdfolk, are avian humanoids who live in high, mountainous regions. They are strong fliers and capable warriors. Aarakocra are bird-like humanoids with feathers and a beak. Their hands have three fingers and a thumb, and they also have a pair of feathered wings. Aarakocra have lean legs ending in talons. Aarakocra look like large birds from below, until they land. Male aarakocra tend to have brighter plumage, often red, yellow, or orange, while female aarakocra are found in duller colors such as brown or gray. However, this is not an exhausted list of potential colours. Their heads resemble those of eagles or parrots, and they have distinct tribal variations. Aarakocra identify one another by their plumage.   Most comfortable in the sky, aarakocra prefer to spend hours soaring on the warm eddies and currents of their native Plane of Air. However, each spends two years on the Prime Material Plane to guard the various rifts and regions of space where the boundaries between the planes are thin. These areas are often used by opportunistic mages to harvest resources from the mountain eyries where the aarakocra and other Auran races dwell.   Aarakocra colonies rarely number more than thirty, with most being trained as warriors. These colonies are nested in trees on the floating mountains that dot the Plane of Air. Each leader, a shaman of sorts, periodically communes with one of the Wind Dukes of Aaqa to report the goings on around rifts in their proximity. Each Wind Duke is a powerful elemental that dwells within the valleys of the largest mountains of the plane.   Aarakocra are rarely seen in the lowlands of the Prime Material.
