The Great Fire of Morkovar occurred during a pivotal period in Ravenmoorian history. At this time, Morkovar had grown from a small settlement into a significant port city, but still relied heavily on wooden construction with minimal urban planning.

The fire began on the evening of Morksalut, the winter solstice festival, when a merchant accidentally knocked over ritual candles while conducting an unauthorized ceremony. The fire raged for three days, consuming nearly two-thirds of the city due to drought conditions, strong winds, narrow streets, and festival celebrations that slowed response time.

The fire led to significant reforms:

  • The "Black Stone Edict" requiring stone for first floors and firebreaks
  • Implementation of wider streets in rebuilt areas
  • Development of more side cannals as a firebreak
  • Establishment of the formal city guard with fire prevention duties
  • New architectural standards throughout the city
