Magical Education System

The Nature of Magic is something that we are quite careful to teach to all who come to the Overlord world, because it is such an inherent part of how things work. Even the scientists who disdain it entirely possess some of its power.

Some Quick Terminology

Conjurer/Soothsayer/Augurer/Enchanter/etc: More specific branches of magic studies. Typically these are the people who work with specific objects or types of objects, and can protest being called one of the less specific names. Be wary. They can be rather obtuse.   Magician: Term used for someone who generally is using magic at all, no matter how or why or how much education they have received. Also for those not using magic at all but some kind of sleight of hand. Blanket term that covers all use or apparent use of magic.   Mage: Specifically someone who has formally studied magic, to whatever level.   Prophet: Not specifically related to magic, but it pops up with regards to magic users a lot more than other populations. Important to remember that you don't have to study magic, or be particularly religious, to end up being a prophet.   Sorcerer/Sorceress: Someone with a great deal of latent natural power, and who has trained to use it effectively.   Witch/Warlock: Generally Evil but can emerge on the side of Good. The standard workman practitioner, who follows the aesthetic of wherever they are. Generally committed to forwarding the story of the Hero.   Wizard: The mad scientist type of mage. Studies magic through their whole lives, exploring the nuances. The closest to science it gets. Standard companion for most fantasy-based heroes. Term applies to men and women because people were too lazy to find a different one.

Magical Institutions

Most of the people responsible for the education of magic exist as a built in component of the elementary school system. By the time they are teenagers, most people are expected to be able to produce a basic fire spell and a taser spell, as well as follow the instructions of a basic ritual.   For those looking to become something more advanced, there are a number of universities available to the discerning young mage. Or the elderly mage looking to switch careers. After all, the ancient wizard is a valued tradition of our society.   Some of the institutions out there:
  • University of Vargal: for those who like burning down stuff
  • Whitewater Charter College
  • Hall of Light
  • Garenholm University
A few of the courses you might expect to take:
  • Botanical Spellcasting: This is a broad field dealing with everything from the proper preservation of potion ingredients to creating magical plantings to the spells used to make ordinary plants grow faster and healthier.
  • Demonic Studies/Traditional Elvish Dark Magic: The latter name is the usual official title, but the former is what everyone calls it. It is a largely theoretical discipline focused on understanding and defending against the magic used by demons, or dark elves.
  • Geomancy: It is also related to transportation spells leading from one point in the Overlord world to another. Experimental Invocations:
  • Portal Studies: A technical field that combines a variety of disciplines, including some scientific ones. Not for the faint of heart. In fact, I would say that this field is equivalent to Earth’s idea of a “rocket scientist.”
  • Runic Engineering: Another field that combines magic and science to a small degree. Runic engineering uses specific symbology to design and maintain spells that are supposed to last for a long time. It is primarily applied to reinforcing buildings and constructing security spells that do not interfere with either the magical or technological aspects of a citadel.
  • Power Homeopathy: for the dedicated herb-wife.
  • Shamanic Bonding Rituals: a certification available for those who want a talking animal to follow them everywhere.
  • Ritual Seismology: in other words, earthquakes and their relation to magic rituals.
  • Remedial Illusionary Invocations: illusion spells are the most basic magic, and the basic principles are interrelated to a number of more advanced fields of magic. Therefore this is one of the more commonly needed remedial courses.
  • Basic Academic Spellwork: a recommended course for those wanting to use magic to speed along their other coursework.
  • Ethics and Necromancy: a philosophy class that discusses a little practical magic but largely focuses on when it is inappropriate to perform a necromancy spell, because this is something a lot of magicians have trouble with apparently.
  • Cages of Inconvenience: a “for-fun” course that addresses some rather unique bindings that the bemused magician can perform.
