True Love's Embrace
The gangers withdrew, cursing, some clutching their sides while still pointing their knives as if they were any use to them. In return, Sabel spun her sword with a malicious grin. "Hey, if you're still in for a fight, I will gladly provide. Or just go away. Your choice."
A few looked like they were wanting to say something in response, but thought the better of it. Good, she thought, they learned their lesson. She might not have to wipe them out. Occasionally a new gang would get uppity at the local runners, and need to be taught the real queen of the block.
Absently scratching her neck, she wondered when the last time one came for revenge was. Long enough ago that she was worried she was getting sloppy. Some disappeared, but none actually came after her after the initial beating nowadays. She should make sure to keep her guard up, just in case.
As she walked back to her apartment, a chuckle came from the alley next to her. "Well done, dear. I was wondering if I should jump in, but seems like you got this. New augm-" That's as far as the voice got before Sabel tackled her with a squeal of joy.
"Shift! It's been so long! I was getting worried, where have you been! I haven't seen you since what, the library basement?" She blinked, her eyes blurring over a little. "Wait, no, hold on... Okay my memory is abandoning me but there was another time. Completely slips my mind..."
Shift gently pushed Sabel away from her to look her in the eyes. "It's okay, dear. I've been busy. But I made sure to keep an eye out for you. You're doing great without me. I told you, didn't I? You'd always be great without me."
There was something in that tone, that lovely droning voice that was somewhat hypnotising. A touch of sadness? And pride. Sabel blinked in confusion before pushing that aside. "Oh you! Darling, you're the one that's great! I missed you! Want to grab a drink with me before you fly off again?"
"That sounds great," Shift replied. Her blood-red lips curved into a smile as her voice somehow grew more distracting. "In fact, that's what I'm here for. Gangbangers may serve as food, but you're what gets me through the night."
Sabel's voice grew sluggish as she responded, her eyes beginning to blink more and more as part of her consciousness started nodding off. "Ah yeah, gangbangers. I hope that previous bunch won't be... A problem. But it should. Be fine..."
Shift looked into Sabel's unfocused eyes. "Oh, it will be fine, love. I've got your back. I'll never let them harm you..." Her smile grew a bit bloodthirsty as she pushed away Sabel's collar and moved her face towards her neck. "I'll never let you go."
