Slums of Isolation Settlement in Out of the Shadows | World Anvil

Slums of Isolation

Located in Gerbera, one of the five original cities of the First Metroplex, the Slums of Isolation are unique due to their location: Unlike other slums, they are surrounded by registered districts, rather than being located on the very edge of cities. And they are not walled off, though that doesn't make it any easier for its residents to leave.   The Slums are surrounded by wide open roads, used by merchants and the likes. These roads are surveilled by security patrols and drone patrols, which will directly spot anyone leaving the slums and give off an alarm. The drones will follow anyone they cannot gun down themselves, passing on their location to the security patrols. Less than 1 in 5000 people manages to successfully escape, and of those many are caught within the next weeks.

Residents
The slums contain tens of thousands of residents, all unregistered and not allowed to leave. Anyone caught will be punished, and if they're lucky thrown back inside. So the people try to make a living instead, growing fungi for food while processing waste products for commodities. They trade with merchants and security at the edge of the slums, or with each other. They are forced to pay off the gangs, even if scammed by outsiders.
Gangs
There are several smaller gangs inside the slums, each with their own primary territory. They spend most of their time forcing the locals into submission, and only occasionally have turf wars against each other. Over a third of the gangmembers are part of the Burt gang, run by Wayne Burt. Most of the other gangs have sworn allegiance to the Burt gang, and the others stay out of the way.
