Lupus Corvus Symbiosis in Out of the Shadows | World Anvil

Lupus Corvus Symbiosis

On Ymir, many species go by an easy handle comparing them to Earth animals. These handles can cover anywhere from one to tens of different species. When there are massive size differences, the additions Major and Minor are often used to help differentiate. While the general population mostly only knows the bearlike Ursa Majors species, outside the First City the Corvus and Lupus species are the species people know most of instead. The reason for this is their natural symbiosis with each other and humanity.   The Corvus species are crow-like and so far, three different species have been identified. The smallest is 38cm on average, while the largest species is 71cm in comparison. It occasionally is called Corvus Major, but not always. All Corvus species have symbiotic interactions with the three Lupus Minor and one Lupus Major species, but the biggest cooperation is between the Corvus Major and Lupis Major species.   In Earth history, ravens and wolves were often tied together in mythology, and ravens were sometimes called wolf birds, due to the way they interacted with each other. Ravens were observed alerting wolves of cadavers, then snack on the leftovers. They also sometimes would play with young wolves. The Corvus Lupus Symbiosis can be considered to have taken this cooperation up a notch.
Involved species/groups
  • Corvus Major
  • Lupus Major
  • Homesteaders

Corvus Major

Large birds with a gray-black pattern, these omnivorous birds have a varied diet including fruit, seeds, and meat. Corvus Major families tend to bond with a single Lupus Major pack, interacting socially and developing their own custom calls. They will not only alert the pack of dead animals and threats, but will occasionally even hunt alongside the pack.

Lupus Major

4m-long wolf-like animals with brown-gray furs, these carnivorous animals have been proven to be extremely intelligent and hunt in large packs. They are non-hostile to humanity, appearing to tolerate people trespassing in their territory. In contrast, they frequently clash with Ursa Majors, chasing them off or hunting them down. Packs may even join forces to take out a Stampede.

Homesteaders

Homesteaders with nearby Lupus Major packs do their best to get along with their neighbours. Some even cooperate with them, developing signals to communicate with both Lupus and Corvus alike. Without getting too close, they may team up to hunt together. Homesteaders will take what they need, then signal the animals to consume the leftovers.
