Black as Night

The figures trailed her through the twilight, with the dark of night quickly approaching in the absence of the sun. Their steps so silent, even a graveyard would feature more sound than their surroundings did. As she walked her path towards a large boulder up ahead, they stuck near her, using whatever cover they could extract from the surroundings to make sure she could not notice them.   They feared her. She moved through the grass without as much as breaking a leaf, all with a solid pace that shouted meaning and motive. She was self-assured, they could tell, and as much as they'd like to scoff at her for it, the truth was that they feared her still.   Around them, the terrain felt strange. They knew these plains, they had called them home all their lives. Yet this eve, they felt like intruders within her domain. Was the grass always this high? Were those bushes here before? Where did that boulder come from? The fear grew within them, and with that fear grew their intent to stop tailing her, to seize her and demand her secrets instead.   She went by the boulder, without her pace as much as faltering. They still were wary of her, taking shelter against the rockside to stay away from her. Yet the wall gave way, soft of nature, not hard as they expected. And warm. A warmth beyond what the sun could grant, the radiance of a living being.   In front of them, part of the boulder moved. A bit of darkness moved and made way for an amber eye the size of an adult's head, observing them as they felt the boulder move, rise to its feet. Ahead of them, she was looking over her shoulder at them, a smile on her face, as she kept moving forward.
