Niendruth
The Fang of the Forests
Niendruth, the Dragon God of Forests and Wild Places, was a deity who ruled over the untamed and savage aspects of nature. His dominion included dense, ancient forests, mist-covered swamps, and remote wildernesses where civilization dared not tread. Niendruth valued dominance and survival, seeing the wilds as a reflection of his own strength. He believed that the strongest should rule, and that nature itself was a place where power was earned through cunning, force, and adaptation. To him, the natural world was not a place of harmony, but one of constant struggle where only the fittest prevailed.
To mortals, Niendruth most often appeared as a massive green dragon, his scales the color of dense foliage, allowing him to blend seamlessly into the forests he ruled. His eyes glowed with a cunning intelligence, and his presence was one of quiet menace. He could also take the form of a tall, rugged man with wild, unkempt hair and piercing green eyes, draped in furs and leaves. In this guise, he was a symbol of the wild’s raw, untamable power, capable of luring mortals into his service with promises of protection or strength, only to reveal his true, ruthless nature later.
Niendruth’s followers were typically those who lived on the edge of society, embracing the wilds as a place of power and freedom. Rangers, druids, and hunters often revered him, seeing him as a source of strength in the wild and a protector of untamed lands. Some barbarian tribes worshiped him as a war god, invoking his name before raids, believing that his blessing would ensure their dominance over others. His clerics, known as Verdant Keepers, wielded the forces of nature to bend the wilds to their will, often using their powers to defend or expand the forests in his name.
Those enslaved to Niendruth were often creatures of the wild—beasts, fey, and even some mortal tribes who found themselves bound to his will. Many were lured into servitude by promises of protection or power, only to discover that Niendruth viewed them as tools to be used for his own purposes. These enslaved beings were tasked with maintaining the forests, serving as guardians, and defending Niendruth’s domain from outside encroachment. They lived under his strict rule, forced to follow his commands or face the wrath of nature itself.
Niendruth's personality was cold, calculating, and predatory. He respected strength and survival instinct above all else, showing favor only to those who could prove their worth in the harshness of the wilds. Compassion and mercy were foreign to him; he viewed the weak as prey, to be used or discarded as needed. Niendruth saw the natural world as a reflection of his own beliefs—an unforgiving, ever-shifting landscape where only the most cunning and ruthless could thrive. His relationships with his followers were transactional at best, and those who disappointed him were quickly cast aside or consumed by the very wilds they sought to master.
