Snapping Sailback
Lurking just below the surface of Ixalan's rivers is one of its deadliest predators, a terrifying beast with a toothy maw. Spending each day swimming the backwaters of Ixalan's inlands, the only sign of a snapping sailback nearby might be the flash of its sail above the water as it dives, or the shredded carcasses it leaves behind it.
Hidden Danger Out at sea, the deep of the waters are ruled by enormous sharks and long-necked plesiosaurs, while the waves and tides are ruled by cut-throat pirates. But follow Ixalan's rivers inland, past its sandy shores and into its steaming jungles, and the snapping sailback becomes the undisputed ruler of the waterways. Though not as large as some dinosaurs, the snapping sailback is far more crafty, perhaps making it the more dangerous threat.
While other large carnivorous dinosaurs charge in, stamping through the treeline and relying on their size and speed to catch their prey, a snapping sailback is content to watch, and wait. Its specialized eyes, like those of a crocodile, allow it to see perfectly while below the murky waters. As it swims, it scans the shores for an unsuspecting meal, making barely a splash as it approaches. Once it's close enough, the snapping sailback leaps up from the water, teeth first, jaws closing around its prey. And before anyone can react, just like that, the snapping sailback is gon again, back beneath the surface with its food.
