Kwende, Pride of Femeref Species in Other Realms | World Anvil

Kwende, Pride of Femeref

Hundreds of years ago, when Dominaria was threatened by the Phyrexian Invasion, people the world over, came together in an alliance to stop them. But as the nation of Zhalfir readied themselves to join the battle, the planeswalker Teferi readied himself for a different decision, unsure if he would ever be able to undo it. Teferi phased out all of Zhalfir, sparing his homeland from the ravages of the invasion.   Now, hundreds of years later, Zhalfir remains lost. Though Teferi saved thousands of lives, hundreds of people were separated from their friends and families, and a nation that had existed for millennia was gone in an instant, maybe for good. Though Teferi must live with the guilt of his decision, there are others who would prefer to see him die by it.   Descendant of Lions The warrior Kwende is one of these people, a son of lost Zhalfir, raised by generations of hate and enmity to seek vengeance on the mage that cost his family everything. Kwende's ancestor was Mageta the Lion, Zhalfir's most famous general, a powerful warrior, and a well-respected man. Knowing the Zhalfir would bare the brunt of the attack, Mageta had sent away much of his family, even as he prepared to lead Zhalfir's armies from its capital city, Ki'pamu; Mageta was in Ki'pamu, separate from his family, as Teferi phased Zhalfir out of existence.   Left with no money, no home, and without the respect, their lineage had accumulated over the centuries, Kwende's ancestors has to scrape and scramble their way through life as refugees. The only connection they had left to their home, and to their lost patriarch, as a pair of crystal blades gifted to their family centuries ago, and used by each of its warriors.   Seeker of Vengeance From the moment Zhalfir was lost, the firstborn child in each generation of Kwende's family was raised to hate Teferi, and to give up everything to seek vengeance. Unknown to them, Teferi had left after the Phyrexian Invasion, disappeared for 300 years, so that no amount of search could reveal him. But Kwende's family never stopped chasing leads, and through several generations came and went without a shred of success, Kwende himself finally found a lead, formulation a plan to take his family's retribution.   Kwende crafted a plot to lure Teferi out of hiding, frame him for the murder of a traveler, and weaken him so that he could no longer use his time magic. Though Kwende's well-laid plan worked, he had not expected the intervention of the caravan owner Subira, thinking no one would bother to defend the Destroyer of Zhalfir. Subira pointed to the crimes that Kwende himself had committed in the pursuit of Teferi and that Teferi had not killed anyone, only ever working to defend Zhalfir and the members of the caravan that Kwende had nearly killed. Kwende, his spirit broken and his worldview brought into question was forced to give up the quest that had driven his family for hundreds of years.   Now, Kwende is adrift in the world, unsure of what his life means without his drive for vengeance. He must also face the consequences of the actions he took to find Teferi and the risks that he put on everyone else. Though raised to be righteous, and assured of the justice in his cause, Kwende is no longer sure of anything.
