Geist-Honored Monk
Hidden away in cloistered monasteries and closely watched by the Avacynian Church, the monks of the Ethereal Path toe the line between spirituality and heroticism. While the Church of Avacyn takes a hard-line stance against conspiring with geists, taking every effort to wipe out the phantoms where they are found, those that follow the Etheral Path hold a radically different opinion. These rarely-seen spiritualists believe that there is both strength and wisdom to be gound in the lingering spirits that litter Innistrad, and make every effort to take advantage of it.
Tradition Untold While belief in the Etheral Path is neither as widespread nor as old as the Avacynian faith, it is still quire venerable, having begun several centuries ago. In the time since its founding, the popularity of the Etheral Path has waxed and waned, at times its methods reaching hundreds of followers, and in others, its spark has been carried by only a few dozen at most. Though the Avacynian Churh has tried, and failed, at various times to stamp out belief in the Etheral Path, for the most part the church has been content to simply keep it a fringe-belief of their own religious organization.
The Ethereal Path was founded by a former Avacynian Priest who had grown upset with the church's response to these problem of Innistrad's many lingering geists. Traditional thought held that, if these ghosts could be eliminated from the land of the living, they would be forced to pass into the Blessed Sleep, the internal quiet that awaits all dead souls. But geists that are forcefully expelled from the mortal coil, without the chance to conclude the unfinished business that grips them, have proven far more susceptible to being raised again. To quell this problem, the founder of the Eternal Path began to believe that by carefully allowing geists to posses their own body, and serve the interests of the living, they could be more easily persuaded to pass on to the Blessed Sleep on their own accord.
The Honored Body What originally began as an outlet for geists to aid the living in simple ways, and help them soothe their restless souls, eventually found other uses in helping to defend the living from harm as well. Spirits that spent their mortal lives fighting against Innnistrad's darkness- cathars, priests, village defenders, and even other monkts- proved just as capable at fighting the darkness in a body that was no longer their own. Though the work was dangerous, and exhausting, the veteran skills of a long-dead geist, combined with the vigorous body of a well-trained monk, proved to be a powerful combination.
To further the benefits of these meldings, some of the monks began to train their bodies, spending hours each day honing their strength and physical reflexes, while also training their mind to better resist incursions by unworthy sprits. This culminated in the theory of the Honored Body- the idea that only a body in peak physical condition can serve as the proper vessel for honorable spirits wishing to help the living. Monks that manage to achieve the ideal of the Honored Body are granted the statues of becoming Geist-onored,a group of select few allowed to meld with honorable spirits and use their unique skills in combat.
