Fleshmad Steed Species in Other Realms | World Anvil

Fleshmad Steed

The terrifying fleshmad steeds of the underworld are disgusting to behold. Their blackened, twisted bodies are covered with a loose layer of pale, dead skin which slides back and forth along their torse. In their eyes shines a malevolent purple light, and their teeth are grotesquely enlarged, allowing them to rend flesh in spite of their blunt surface.   The fleshmad steeds were created by Erebos himself and endowed with an insatiable hunger for the meat of both the living and the dead. They are among the ranks of abominations that Erebos uses to guard his realm, but they also serve to torment his eternal prisoners and act as draft horses for the god of the dead's own chariot.   A Terrifying Idea Though not the most dangerous creature in the Underworld, fleshmad steeds are among the most frightening, and tales of their heinous hunger have even reached the ears of mortals in the land of the living. Erebos takes some twisted pleasure in the idea that even the living fear his creations, but is unable to lay total claim to the horses' origins. The ruler of the Underworld was inspired by the deeds of Ariomades, a petty king that once ruled lands near Akros.   In life, Ariomades was selfish and cruel, ruling his kingdom with an iron fist, kept safe from the gods' wrath only by his staunch dedication to the worship of Erebos. Ariomades was notorious for the many colorful punishments he designed for those who displeased him, all of which ended in death, whether the victim had truly wronged the man or not. Among his favorite tormenhs was throwing his enemies, still living, into his stables, which were filled with horses he had raised from birth on a diet of human flesh. When Ariomades finally died, Erebos greeted him warmly, probing his mind for every torture the man could incent. And once he finished, Erebos rewarded Ariomades by flinging him into the deepest pits of the Underworld, to languis and suffer as his victims once had.
