Fleecemane Lion
Found at the far edge of the forests around Setessa, the fleecemanes are a breed of enormous lion, fully twice the size of a normal lion. These lions have shaggy, white manes that stretch to the ground, and their hides are a tanned bronze and almost as strong as the metal itself.
Thick-Skinned Attempting to hunt a fleecemane lion requires a great amount of stupidity, bravery, necessity, or some combination of the three. Even the greatest hunters of Setessa refuse to track the beast, believing the reward is rarely worth the difficulty of slaying one. If a fleecemane can be slain, however, and a tool found that is capable of piercing the body, there are few materials as useful for armor as a fleecemane hide.
In the past, hunting a fleecemane lion was considered a rite of passage for warriors that sought the honor of joining Nylea's elite guard of hunters. Nylea's priests claimed that slaying a fleecemane lion, and offering the hide to the god of the hunt, could draw her attention long enough to state your case. If you were rejected, Nylea would keep the hide for herself; but if Nylea accepted you into her ranks, she would transform the hide into armor to be worn into battle.
Lost Legacy Nylea's desire for the pelts of fleecemane lions is not born purely of the beauty of the hunt, but also out of a desire to see the beasts wiped from Theros. This is because the fleecemane lions are not natural creatures, but were not crafted from Nyx by the gods. In fact, fleecemane lions are a monster made by human hands, created by the citizens of the lost polis of Olantis.
When the gods turned against Olantis, punishing the people for their hubris, they struck down the city and set about wiping out any trace of its inhabitants. Nylea was placed in charge of destroying the unnatural creatures that had been created, and many of which had escaped when the city was razed. The fleecemane lions are one of the few creations of Olantis that remain, the powerful hides gifted to them by their creators serving to protect them from the wrath of the gods.
