Eidolons

When the people of Theros die, they are brought to the Underworld to rest forever. Though the Underworld is an end to life as Therosians know it, the end it offers is not always a permanent one. Though escape from the Underworld is rare, it does happen.   When one of the Theros' many dead travels back to the land of the living, the return journey is just as harrowing as the trip down. The accumulated psychic stresses of dying, living without memory in the Underworld, and returning to life all come together to shred the psyche of the dead creature, sundering the soul from the body. While the body itself comes back to the world of the living as a Returned, an undead with vague memories of its own past, the creature's soul is not so lucky. Left with no memories, no physical form, and no connections to the world in which it is now trapped, these souls become the drifting spirits known as eidolons.   Lost Souls Although eidolons are without physical form or memory, they are still influenced by the lives they lived as mortals, though they lack the intelligence to realize this is so. An eidolon that was a great general in life might search for soldiers to lead and inspire, a spirit whose mortal form took great interest in earthly pleasures might seek out those same pleasures, even if it can no longer partake in them. Eidolons such as these, however, are the exception rather than the rule- in general, the largest influencing factor in the type of eidolon a spirit returns as is the amount of optimism with which they lived their lives.

Baleful Eidolon

For those who spend their time on the mortal world of Theros beset by stress, concern, worry, and a general sense of hopelessness, their fate upon a return from death is to be transformed into a baleful eidolon. Baleful eidolons are easily spotted by their stopped posture and shuffling movements, as well as the dim twinkling of the pattern of star-stuff that makes up their bodies- feeble sparks in comparison to the glittering lights of other eidolons.

The pent-up feelings of fears and anxiety that baleful eidolons carried with them in life seem to be leaked over into their afterlives and beyond. Baleful eidolons struggle with unending hopelessness, born of an inability to find meaning in a purposeless existence. At the same time, baleful eidolons fear the potential of death now more than ever. Without a mortal body to be ferried back to the Underworld, what happens to an eidolon when it dies is a mystery, known only to the gods- and perhaps not even to them. If the life of an eidolon ends, they may dissolve forever into nonexistence, and it is this very fear that keeps baleful eidolons trapped in their tormented existence.

Hopeful Eidolon

Standing in stark contrast to the shadowed lives of the baleful eidolons, hopeful eidolons are spirits born from the souls of those who lived their lives with passion, joy, and most of all, hope. Though their bodies are made from the same night-sky pattern of Nyx-stuff that baleful eidolons are crafted from, hopeful eidolons glow with a powerful inner light, and the stars studding their bodies twinkle like gems at every moment. They stand tall and proud, often at a height of several inches taller than the average human, and though they lack eyes, the feelings of their gaze is immediate in the sense of warmth it projects.

Rather than burden themselves with thoughts of a forgotten past or an unknowable future, hopeful eidolons focus entirely on the here and now. These eidolons take joy in the simple fact of their existence, acknowledging that each moment they remain alive is a miracle, a moment that their previous selves conquered death itself to achieve. Hopeful eidolons are on a constant search for new experiences and sensations, looking to fill themselves with new memories to replace those they have long since lost. The bright energy of these spirits can be infections, but carousing with one is not without cost- there is no limit to the energies of a hopeful eidolon, but they also spare no thought for the limits of their living companions, and will not hesitate to leave behind those that can't keep up with their desires.
