Battlewise Hoplite
In the polis of Meletis, the values of wisdom and intellect are held in the highest regard, above physical prowess or strength of personality. These ideals extend even to Meletis' military forces, where soldiers are expected to show not only strength and bravery but a cunning and strategic mind as well.
Known as the Battlewise, Meletian soldiers are famous for being able to out-think any opponent they come across, and always find a strategy that leads them to victory.
Battlewise Techniques Though the mystique of the Akroan army assures that they are more feared, the Battlewise of the Meletians are still highly respected by the people of Theros. The ability of the Meletian soldiers to adapt to any situation with on-the-fly development of new strategies means there are few fights they have ever lost. Many of the standard battle techniques used by warriors across Theors, including the classic phalanx technique used by all hoplites, are said to be originally be conceived by the Battlewise.
History of the Battlewise The history of the Battlewise begins during the ancient war with the Archon empire, the tyrannical oppressors of all Theros. Though Meletis itself did not yet exist a small group of warriors joined together over a shared belief that they could overcome the superior power of the archons through superior tactics. In the end, this belief served them well and led by the famous hero Delaximenes, this small band of fighters was able to take on and defeat great numbers of the archons' soldiers,a s well as end the lives of several archons themselves.
Delaximenes lost his life during the war, cut down by archons that studied the hero's own techniques, and turned them against him. But that archons were too late in adopting the new methods of battle, and still lost the war, their empire crumbling and giving way to the poleis that exist today. As a reward for his great service to Theros, the gods chose to transform Delaximenes into a Nyxborn, a living constellation free to walk among the gods in Nyx and travel to Theros at will.
