Artisan of Forms
For decades, the people of Theros, and the citizens of Meletis in particular, have had a strong relationship with the sphinxes that live in and around the cliffs of the Siren Sea. Vast in both wisdom and mystery, these sphinxes are sometimes silent observers, keeping an eye on the events of Theros, and sometimes active participants, subtly guiding those same events.
Sometimes, when a sphinx needs to take a more active role, they choose to do so through proxies-humans that have dedicated their lives in apprenticeship to the sphinx, in return for arcane secrets and lore.
Shifting Appearances To ensure that their agent is not discovered, a sphinx will often teach its apprentice magical techniques for hiding in plain sight. Chief among these is the ability to alter their own form using the magic of themselves and others to quickly change shape. These shapers are often common beasts, easily overlooked by those who are expecting infiltrators in human form.
If necessary, a true master of this shapeshifting magic can even take the appearance of other people, allowing them to infiltrate social circles otherwise closed to them. These transformations, though illusionary, are so well-done that they are impossible to see through, except with the strongest magic. Though the transformation is short, and difficult to maintain, this ability to masquerade as anyone is the lynchpin of an artisan's toolbox.
