Arena Athlete

Every year in Arkos, the entire city takes a week away from their normal work and trade, to partake in the largest gladiatorial games in Theros. Known as the Iroan Games, these competitions are the largest celebration of the God of Victory in all Theros. Hundreds of Competitions happen over the course of the week, and dozens of athletes and heroes participate in each event, hoping to with the glory of Iroas' blessing.   Athletic Lifestyle While most of the participants in the Iroan Games are native Akroans, some competitors come from all over Theros, traveling from Setessa or Meletis, or even further. These athletes often spend their whole year training for the games, practicing their sport of choice and hoping to clear the competition. Some find ways to turn their training into a job, allowing them to support themselves while they train, while others seek out patrons and sponsors to support them so that they can focus on their work.   No matter how they find the time to train, each of the athletes that compete does it entirely out of love for the sport. The Iroan Games do not hand out awards, and while betting on the outcome of the games is legal, even for the athletes themselves, there is no prize money. The only possible award is a visit from Iroas himself, whether by a sign of his favor, his appearance in the sky above the coliseum, or even more rarely, a direct visit at the victory ceremony.   Blessing of Strength Though there are hundreds of competitors, and almost as many games, not every victor receives Iroas' blessings. To be awarded but not have Iroas show is a disappointment, but so frequent that it is almost expected. Iroas most often appears for those who have made an overwhelming victory or excelled against great competition, and the manner in which he appears dictates the strength of his blessing, with a simple sign conferring only a small blessing, and a direct visit by the god himself often granting a powerful boon to the blessed.
